THIS EFFORT IS A SUB TASK ASSOCIATED WITH THE 2020 NASA GLENN RESEARCH CENTER (GRC) CIF PROPOSAL ENTITLED LUNAR DUST SENSOR FOR CREWED ENVIRONMENTS BY DR. DAVID FISCHER AND PAUL GREENBERG WHICH AIMS TO DEVELOP A SMART AEROSOL SENSOR WITH THE CAPABILITY TO DISCRIMINATE BETWEEN DUST AND SMOKE AND TO SUBSEQUENTLY ESTIMATE THE VARIOUS MOMENTS OF THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION(S). THE ANTICIPATED APPROACH IS TO BUILD ON PREVIOUS SENSORS DEVELOPED AT GRC [1] THAT RELY ON AEROSOL SCATTER AT A SINGLE WAVELENGTH AND MULTIPLE SCATTER ANGLES. TO PROVIDE INCREASED CONFIDENCE IN THE DETECTION OF SMOKE IN THE PRESENCE OF LUNAR DUST THE INCORPORATION OF ADDITIONAL WAVELENGTHS AND POLARIZATION SENSITIVE OPTICS WILL BE EXPLORED. THESE VARIOUS OBSERVABLES WILL BE EMPLOYED IN A TWO-STAGE PROCESS TO FIRST PROVIDE A QUANTIFIABLE PROBABILITY THAT THE AEROSOL IN QUESTION IS ONE SPECIES OR THE OTHER. SUBSEQUENT TO THE CLASSIFICATION ESTIMATION OF THE VARIOUS MOMENTS (PARTICLE SIZE SURFACE AREA OR MASS) OF THE DISTRIBUTION(S) WILL BE MADE.
