COLLEGE OF MARINE SCIENCES UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA ST PETERSBURG FL 33701 MY LONG-TERM RESEARCH INTERESTS INVOLVE THE OCEAN S RESPONSE TO THE CHANGING GLOBAL CLIMATE. MY ACADEMIC TRAINING AND RESEARCH EXPERIENCE HAVE PROVIDED ME WITH AN EXCELLENT BACKGROUND IN MULTIPLE DISCIPLINES INCLUDING COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS AND FLUID MECHANICS OCEANOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE SCIENCE. AS AN UNDERGRADUATE I WAS ABLE TO CONDUCT RESEARCH AT XI AN JIAO TONG UNIVERSITY ON THE COUPLED PHYSICAL-BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES ON A GOLD SURFACE. AS A MASTER STUDENT AT THE INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPHY CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES MY RESEARCH FOCUSED ON THE PACIFIC DECADAL OSCILLATION AND SEA LEVEL CHANGE AIMING TO REDUCE THE INFLUENCE OF LONG-TERM CLIMATE VARIABILITIES ON THE EVALUATION OF REGIONAL SEA LEVEL RISE. THESE EXPERIENCES HELP ME BECOME FAMILIAR WITH COMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS NUMERICAL ANALYSIS AND CLIMATE SCIENCE. AS A PH.D. STUDENT IN THE COLLEGE OF MARINE SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA (USF) I AM PARTICULARLY INTERESTED IN CHANGE IN OCEAN SALINITY THE RELATED DYNAMICAL PROCESSES AS WELL AS ITS IMPLICATION FOR UNDERSTANDING CLIMATE CHANGE. MY RESEARCH GOAL IS TO DESCRIBE THE SALINITY CHANGE IN THE GLOBAL OCEAN AND THE RELATED DYNAMICAL PROCESSES TO FURTHER IMPROVE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THE DEEP AND ABYSSAL OCEANS RESPONSE TO THE CHANGING SURFACE FORCING. THIS GOAL IS CLOSELY RELATED TO DR. XINFENG LIANG S PROJECT SUPPORTED BY NSF ON EVALUATING THE EXISTING OCEAN REANALYSES TO DETERMINE IF THEY ARE SUITABLE FOR EXAMINING LONG-TERM CLIMATE CHANGES. ALSO AT USF THE ACADEMIC COURSES I ATTENDED INCLUDE ALL FOUR MAJOR DISCIPLINES OF MARINE SCIENCE: GEOLOGICAL CHEMICAL BIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL OCEANOGRAPHY. THIS INTER-DISCIPLINE LEARNING EXPERIENCE MY RESEARCH PROJECT AND TRAINING GAVE ME A SOLID FOUNDATION TO REACH MY GOAL OF STUDYING THE EARTH S CLIMATE SYSTEM AND HOW THE HUMAN ACTIVITIES INFLUENCE IT. IN THE PAST YEARS I HAVE OBTAINED THE KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNIQUES FOR ANALYZING VARIOUS OCEANIC DATA PRODUCTS INCLUDING THE STATE-OF-THE-ART OCEAN STATE ESTIMATE---ECCO (ESTIMATING THE CIRCULATION AND CLIMATE OF THE OCEAN). THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL PROVIDE ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO FURTHER EXPLORE THE INTERESTING PRELIMINARY RESULTS (PRESENTED IN THE PROPOSAL TEXT) ON THE GLOBAL OCEAN VERTICAL SALT TRANSPORT. ALSO THE PROPOSAL INCLUDES SUPPORT FOR A VARIETY OF CONFERENCES AND WORKSHOPS AIMED TO ENHANCE MY ABILITY TO BE AN INDEPENDENT RESEARCHER. IF FUNDED MY RESEARCH WILL UNDOUBTEDLY BENEFIT FROM THE SUPPORT FROM NASA AND AT THE SAME TIME LIKELY ADVANCES OUR UNDERSTANDING ABOUT THE GLOBAL OCEAN SALINITY CHANGES AND THE GLOBAL WATER CYCLE.
