NASAS FUTURE MISSIONS WILL PUSH THE BOUNDS OF HUMAN-SPACE EXPLORATION AND CHALLENGE THE MISSION DESIGNERS AND ENGINEERS TO CREATE AUTOMATED SYSTEMS THAT WILL ENABLE THE JOINT HUMAN-AUTOMATION TEAMS TO OPERATE MORE AUTONOMOUSLY AS THEY MOVE FURTHER FROM TERRESTRIALLY BASED MISSION CONTECHNOLOGIES FOR MIXED-INITIATIVE PLAN MANAGEMENT FOR HUMAN SPACE FLIGHT TROL AND THE TIME LAG OF COMMUNICATION BECOMES A CHALLENGE. FOR FUTURE MISSIONS THE CREW WILL NEED PLANNING SYSTEMS TO MEET AS MANY MISSION OBJECTIVES AS POSSIBLE GIVEN THE CONSTRAINTS OF CREW AND VEHICLE SAFETY AND WITHIN THE RESOURCE LIMITATIONS INHERENT TO THEIR EQUIPAGE. THESE SYSTEMS MUST SUPPORT NOT ONLY CREATION OF PLANS BUT ALSO THEIR MONITORING AND ACTIVE MANAGEMENT INCLUDING ADAPTING PLANS OR RE-PLANNING COMPLETELY IN OFF-NOMINAL CONDITIONS.A SUCCESSFUL PLAN MANAGEMENT TOOL RESTS ON THE ABILITY TO SOLVE THREE INTERTWINED CHALLENGES SIMULTANEOUSLY: (1) A FORMAL REPRESENTATION OF THE WORK ENCOMPASSED IN THE PLAN (HIERARCHICALLY-DEFINED ACTIVITIES AND RESOURCES AND THE CONSTRAINTS PUT UPON THEM); (2) THE INTERFACE FOR A HUMAN PLANNER TO REASON ABOUT (AND BUILD AND MODIFY) A PLAN BOTH AT THE DETAILED LEVEL OF RESOURCE SCHEDULING AND THE HIGH LEVEL ABSTRACTIONS AND IN BOTH NOMINAL AND OFF-NOMINAL CONDITIONS; AND (3) COMPUTATIONAL METHODS TO CREATE AND ULTIMATELY OPTIMIZE PLANS WHICH CAN POTENTIALLY SCALE FROM FOCUSED NEAR-TERM OFF-NOMINAL DISTURBANCE RESPONSE TO MORE STRATEGIC PLANNING OF LARGER SETS OF ACTIVITIES AND LONGER DURATIONS. IN THIS PROPOSAL WE PROPOSE TO ADDRESS EACH OF THE THREE CHALLENGES IN A MULTIDISCIPLINARY INTEGRATED RESEARCH PROGRAM THAT ADDRESSES THE FOUR RESEARCH AREAS LISTED IN THE PROPOSAL: RA1) FORMAL REPRESENTATIONS OF PLANS WITH HIERARCHICAL DECOMPOSITION&FORMAL CONSTRAINT REPRESENTATION RA2) AUTONOMOUS REASONING TECHNIQUES WHICH CAN SCALE AS NECESSARY RA3) AUTONOMOUS REASONING TECHNIQUES THAT CAN RE-PLAN UNDER NOMINAL AND OFF-NOMINAL CIRCUMSTANCES AND RA4) NOVEL INTERFACES THAT ALLOWS VISUALIZATION OF PLANS AT MULTIPLE LEVELS OF ABSTRACTION.OUR PROPOSED RESEARCH ON WORK REPRESENTATION ADDRESSES RA1 AS WELL AS EXPLICITLY SEEKS TO SUPPORT RAS 2 3 &4 IN THAT THE REPRESENTATION WILL BE DESIGNED FROM THE START TO BE PROBLEM-DRIVEN (I.E. ITS UNDERLYING REPRESENTATION IS BUILT AROUND THE NEEDS OF AUTONOMOUS SPACEFLIGHT PLANNING AND RECOGNIZES THAT ACTIVITY PLANNING AND RESOURCE SCHEDULING CANNOT BE DE-COUPLED IN THIS DOMAIN) COMPREHENSIBLE (FACILITATING NOVEL INTERFACES THAT CAN BE VISUALIZED) COMPUTATIONAL (PROVIDING THE DOMAIN MODEL SUITABLE FOR OPTIMIZATION TOOLS) AND SCALE-ABLE (ALLOWING FOR BOTH DETAILED AND EXPANSIVE AGGREGATED VIEWS OF THE PLAN). OUR PROPOSED WORK ON SYSTEM INTERACTION ADDRESSES RAS 3&4 WITH INTERACTION TECHNIQUES GOING BEYOND THE CREATION OF NOVEL VISUALIZATIONS TO ALSO EXAMINE THE CORE CONSTRUCTS AND METHODS BY WHICH A HUMAN PLANNER CAN REASON ABOUT THE PLAN WHICH IN TURN WILL DRIVE THE AUTONOMOUS REASONING TECHNIQUES FOR RA3. OUR PROPOSED WORK ON PLAN CREATION ADDRESSES RAS 2&3 EXTENDING AVAILABLE TECHNIQUES USED IN LARGE-SCALE OPTIMIZATION IN OTHER DOMAINS (E.G. SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT).WE PROPOSE A TWO YEAR EFFORT TO ADDRESS THE THREE RESEARCH CHALLENGES DESCRIBED IN THE TECHNICAL APPROACH SECTION. TO ADDRESS THESE RESEARCH CHALLENGES OUR GOALS ARE: (1) CREATE A REPRESENTATION OF THE WORK OF PLANNING WHICH ENABLES COMPUTATION AND VISUALIZATION (2) IDENTIFY CRUCIAL MODES OF INTERACTION AND ASSOCIATED FUNCTIONAL CAPABILITIES AND (3) DEVELOP ALGORITHMS TO MONITOR AND ADAPT PLANS.THE RESULTANT PLAN MANAGEMENT TOOL IS ENVISIONED TO BE AT THE TRL 3. WE BELIEVE THE CURRENT CONCEPTS AND TECHNOLOGIES WHICH WILL BE INTEGRATED INTO IT ARE AT TRLS OF 1 AND 2. TO FACILITATE SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENT OF THIS PROJECTS DEVELOPMENTS OUR LAST TASK WILL ENSURE THAT THE PROTOTYPE IS IN A FORM THAT OTHERS CAN USE EXTEND OR BUILD UPON WITH APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTATION AND DESCRIPTIONS.
