THE NASA ER-2 AIRCRAFT WILL BE FLOWN FROM MACON GA DURING APRIL AND MAY 2017 FOR VALIDATION OF THE INSTRUMENTS ON BOARD THE GOES-R SATELLITE. NASA GODDARD WILL FLY THE GEO- CAPE AIRBORNE SIMULATOR (GCAS) INSTRUMENT ON THE ER-2 DURING THIS MISSION FOR REMOTE SENSING OF NO2 PARTICULARLY OVER THUNDERSTORMS TO EXAMINE THE PRODUCTION OF NOX BY LIGHTNING. WE WILL PARTICIPATE IN THIS FIELD MISSION BY PROVIDING ASSISTANCE TO FLIGHT PLANNING EXAMINING THE QUICK-LOOK NO2 SLANT COLUMN RETRIEVALS IN RELATION TO OBSERVED LIGHTNING ACTIVITY AND REPORTING PRELIMINARY RESULTS DURING SCIENCE TEAM MEETINGS. POST-MISSION WE WILL ASSEMBLE ALL THE DATA NECESSARY FOR COMPUTING LIGHTNING NOX PRODUCTION PER FLASH FOR THE OBSERVED STORMS. WE WILL USE THE GCAS NO2 VERTICAL COLUMN RETRIEVALS (CONVERTED TO NOX) OVER THUNDERSTORMS COMBINED WITH LIGHTNING FLASH RATE DATA FROM THE FEGS INSTRUMENT ON THE ER-2 AND THE GEOSTATIONARY LIGHTNING MAPPER ON GOES-R TO ESTIMATE THE MEAN NOX PRODUCTION PER FLASH DURING SPECIFIC TIME INTERVALS OVER THE LIFETIME OF STORMS OBSERVED DURING THE MISSION. WE WILL ALSO DETERMINE IF THE HIGH-SPATIAL-RESOLUTION GCAS DATA WILL ENABLE ESTIMATION OF LIGHTNING NOX PRODUCTION FOR INDIVIDUAL OBSERVED FLASHES. WE WILL REPORT FINDINGS AT AGU AND AMS MEETINGS AND SUBMIT A MANUSCRIPT TO A SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL.
