STATEMENT OF WORK ACTIVITIES PROPOSED BY THE SOUTHWEST RESEARCH INSTITUTE WILL BE PERFORMED AT THE DEPARTMENT OF SPACE SCIENCE SPACE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING DIVISION SAN ANTONIO TX. DR. MIHIR I. DESAI WILL PARTICIPATE IN DATA ANALYSIS ACTIVITIES AND INSTRUMENT SUPPORT AT THE SOUTHWEST RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR THE SUPRATHERMAL THROUGH ENERGETIC PARTICLE (STEP) TELESCOPE (WHICH IS PART OF THE WIND EPACT INVESTIGATION. THE EPACT PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR IS DR. TYCHO VON ROSENVINGE/ERIC CHRISTIAN OF NASA/GSFC. OUR OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY WILL BE TO SUPPORT AND ASSIST IN THE ANALYSIS OF SUPRATHERMALTHROUGH- ENERGETIC PARTICLE DATA OBTAINED BY THE WIND/STEP INSTRUMENT AND STUDY THE COMPOSITION AND SPECTRA OF ENERGETIC PARTICLES ACCELERATED DURING QUIET-TIMES AND IN COROTATING INTERACTION REGIONS SOLAR ENERGETIC PARTICLE EVENTS AND INTERPLANETARY SHOCK EVENTS. WE WILL ALSO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR DELIVERING STEP DATA TO THE NSSDC AND OTHER GSFC-DESIGNATED DATA ARCHIVES AND SERVERS FOR PUBLIC USE. SPECIFIC SCIENCE ACTIVITIES PROPOSED INCLUDE: STUDY THE ION COMPOSITION AND SPECTRA OF PARTICLES ACCELERATED IN QUIET-TIMES CIRS IP SHOCKS AND SEP EVENTS. DEVELOP ESSENTIAL SOFTWARE FOR THE ANALYSIS OF STEP DATA. PARTICIPATE IN WIND MEETINGS AND ACTIVITIES TO COORDINATE ANALYSIS WITH OTHER SYSTEMS. ANALYZE STEP OBSERVATIONS IN CONJUNCTION WITH OTHER WIND INSTRUMENTS IN ADDRESSING SCIENTIFIC QUESTIONS RELEVANT TO THE WIND MISSION AND PUBLICATION OF SCIENTIFIC FINDINGS AND DISCOVERIES IN REFEREED JOURNALS SUCH AS THE ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNAL AND JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH. TRAVEL TO AND PARTICIPATION IN SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCES AND WORKSHOPS FOR PRESENTATION OF RESULTS FROM STEP. SUCH CONFERENCES INCLUDE MEETINGS OF THE AMERICAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION NSF SHINE MEETINGS AND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES SUCH AS COSPAR AND THE SOLAR WIND SERIES. TRAVEL TO AND PARTICIPATION IN WIND WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES IN SUPPORT OF STEP SCIENCE STUDIES. SUPPORT WIND SCIENCE TEAM PROPOSALS WRITTEN FOR THE NASA SENIOR REVIEW PROCESS. ATTACHED IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE TYPE OF DATA ANALYSES THAT WE WILL PERFORM USING THE STEP DATA. THE ATTACHMENT IS A DRAFT OF A PAPER IN REVIEW IN THE ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNAL. IT IS FIRST-AUTHORED BY UTSA PHD CANDIDATE RACHAEL FILWETT. THE PAPER DESCRIBES A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF THE ORIGIN AND ACCELERATION LOCATIONS OF SUPRATHERMAL HEAVY IONS IN COROTATING INTERACTION REGIONS USING THE WIND/STEP DATA. 3 IN ADDITION WE WILL ALSO PERFORM THE FOLLOWING DATA ANALYSES AND ARCHIVING ACTIVITIES: SUPPORT DATA ANALYSIS AND MISSION OPERATION EFFORTS AT GSFC. MONITOR THE HEALTH AND PERFORMANCE OF THE STEP INSTRUMENT INCLUDING MONITORING OF CALIBRATION DETECTION OF ANOMALIES AND INITIATION OF GROUND COMMANDING TO TAKE REQUIRED ACTIONS IF NEEDED. SUPPORT SOFTWARE ALGORITHMS USED FOR BROWSE DATA AND NSSDC DATA SUBMISSIONS. GENERATE OF ROUTINE LEVEL 2 DATA PRODUCTS INCLUDING PARTICLE FLUX LEVELS ANISOTROPIES AND SPECTRA. GENERATE OF ROUTINE OVERVIEW PLOTS ON E.G. MULTI-DAY TIME SCALES FOR DETECTION OF SPECIFIC INTERPLANETARY EVENTS. SUPPORT NASA GUEST INVESTIGATOR PROGRAMS. SPECIFICALLY WE WILL SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING TWO TYPES OF DATA PRODUCTS FOR ARCHIVING AND PUBLIC USE: 1. 1 HOUR SECTOR-AVERAGED INTENSITIES OF H HE CNO NES AND FE IN ~6-10 ENERGY CHANNELS BETWEEN ~20 KEV/NUCLEON 2.56 MEV/NUCLEON FROM THE TWO STEP TELESCOPES. 2. 10 MINUTE-AVERAGED INTENSITIES OF H HE CNO NES AND FE IN ~6-10 ENERGY CHANNELS BETWEEN ~20 KEV/NUCLEON 2.56 MEV/NUCLEON SEPARATED INTO 8 SECTORS FOR THE TWO TELESCOPES.
