BREAKING WAVES ON THE OCEAN SURFACE RESULT IN THE ENTRAINMENT OF AIR BUBBLES THAT SCAVENGE ORGANIC MATTER FROM SEAWATER AS THEY RISE TO THE SURFACE (TSENG ET AL. 1992). WHEN INJECTED TO THE ATMOSPHERE THE BUBBLES BURST AND YIELD PRIMARY SUB-MICROMETER SEA SPRAY AEROSOL (SSA) ENRICHED IN ORGANIC MATTER RELATIVE TO SEAWATER (KEENE ET AL. 2007; FACCHINI ET AL. 2008; BATES ET AL. 2012). SSA IN THE ATMOSPHERE SCATTERS SOLAR RADIATION (QUINN AND COFFMAN 1998) ACTS AS CLOUD CONDENSATION NUCLEI (CCN) (CLARKE ET AL. 2006) AND HAS A LARGE IMPACT ON ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY THROUGH MULTIPHASE REACTIONS (KEENE ET AL. 2007). UNDERSTANDING THE SOURCE EMISSION FLUX COMPOSITION AND CCN ACTIVITY OF SSA IS REQUIRED FOR ACCURATELY MODELING ITS IMPACT ON TROPOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY AND MARINE BOUNDARY LAYER (MBL) CLOUD PROPERTIES. THE OCEANOGRAPHIC MEASUREMENTS CONDUCTED DURING NAAMES PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT FAR-NORTH ATLANTIC BLOOM DYNAMICS DURING DIFFERENT SEASONS. THE ATMOSPHERIC IN SITU AND SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS DOCUMENT AEROSOL AND CLOUD PROPERTIES OVER THE NORTH ATLANTIC THAT ARE ALSO AFFECTED BY SEASONAL CONDITIONS (E.G. DEGREE OF PHOTOCHEMICAL PROCESSING) BUT MAY OR MAY NOT BE DIRECTLY DUE TO CHANGES IN THE PLANKTON ECOSYSTEM. MBL AMBIENT AEROSOL IS A MIXTURE OF FRESHLY EMITTED SSA PARTICLES OF CONTINENTAL AND MARINE ORIGIN THAT HAVE BEEN MIXED INTO THE MBL FROM THE FREE TROPOSPHERE AND PARTICLES OF VARIOUS AGES AND ORIGINS THAT HAVE BEEN CHEMICALLY MODIFIED (E.G. CLARKE ET AL. 1998). FOR EXAMPLE SOON AFTER EMISSION SECONDARY ORGANIC REACTION PRODUCTS DERIVED FROM THE OXIDATION OF PRECURSOR GASES CAN CONDENSE ONTO FRESHLY EMITTED SSA (TUREKIAN ET AL. 2003). IN ADDITION THE ORGANIC MATTER IN FRESHLY EMITTED SSA CAN REACT PHOTOCHEMICALLY RESULTING IN A LOSS OF PARTICULATE ORGANIC SPECIES AND THE PRODUCTION OF VOLATILE LOW MOLECULAR WEIGHT ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (ZHOU ET AL. 2008). THIS COMPLEX MIXTURE OF AEROSOLS AND THE PROCESSING THAT OCCURS IN THE MARINE ATMOSPHERE MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO CHARACTERIZE FRESHLY EMITTED SSA THROUGH MEASUREMENTS OF AMBIENT MARINE AEROSOL. GENERATION OF FRESHLY EMITTED SSA BY METHODS ABLE TO ISOLATE SSA FROM EXISTING AMBIENT AEROSOLS ALLOWS FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF A DIRECT LINK BETWEEN SURFACE SEAWATER AND SSA PROPERTIES. TWO SUCH METHODS ARE SEA SWEEP (BATES ET AL. 2012) WHICH GENERATES BUBBLES IN SITU IN OCEAN SURFACE WATERS WHILE THE RESULTING SSA IS DRAWN INTO SHIPBOARD INSTRUMENTATION AND MART (STOKES ET AL. 2013) WHERE SEAWATER IS PUMPED INTO A TANK FOR GENERATION OF SSA.
