THE MAJOR RESEARCH FOCUS OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT IS TO ADVANCE THE STATE OF THE ART OF AUTONOMOUS NAVIGATION OF SPACE VEHICLES IN THE ABSENCE OF GPS MEASUREMENTS. THE WORK DEVELOPS DEEP SPACE AS WELL AS SPACECRAFT RENDEZVOUS NAVIGATION SOLUTIONS. RENDEZVOUS WITHOUT GPS ALLOWS FOR A COMMON FRAMEWORK FOR BOTH EARTH ORBIT AND NON-EARTH ORBIT SCENARIOS. AUTONOMOUS DEEP SPACE NAVIGATION AVOIDS THE NEED FOR CONTINUOUS COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE GROUND. BOTH THESE RESEARCH AREAS FIND GREAT APPLICABILITY IN NASAS FUTURE ORION MISSIONS WHICH ARE PLANNED TO TAKE HUMANS TO DEEP SPACE AND RENDEZVOUS OUTSIDE OF LOW OR MID EARTH ORBITS.
