EUROPA IS A PRIME CANDIDATE IN THE SEARCH FOR HABITABLE ENVIRONMENTS IN OUR SOLAR SYSTEM BECAUSE IT HARBORS A SUBSURFACE WATER OCEAN THAT IS LIKELY IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE MOON'S SILICATE MANTLE. THE EXISTENCE OF WATER VAPOR PLUMES AND THE POSSIBLE ACCESSIBILITY OF A SUBSURFACE LIQUID RESERVOIR AT SUCH OUTGASSING LOCATIONS HAVE FAR-REACHING IMPLICATIONS FOR THE FUTURE EXPLORATION OF EUROPA S UNIQUE POTENTIALLY HABITABLE ENVIRONMENT AS ALSO DISCUSSED EXTENSIVELY FOR ENCELADUS AND ITS PLUMES. WE PROPOSE A SERENDIPITOUS SEARCH OF GASEOUS ACTIVITY FROM EUROPA BY USING HIGH-RESOLUTION NEAR-INFRARED (IR) SPECTROSCOPY. OUR IR SURVEY SEEKS TO CONFIRM AND CONSTRAIN THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF POSSIBLE EUROPAN PLUMES THAT CAN AID THE INVESTIGATION OF PHYSICAL PROCESSES UNDERLYING ITS SURFACE. MULTIPLE VISITS WILL BE NEEDED TO ASSESS THE TEMPORAL BEHAVIOR OR EVEN EXISTENCE OF PLUMES. OUR STUDY WILL: 1) PROVIDE INFORMATION THAT CAN INFORM PLANNING FOR THE NASA S EUROPA MISSION 2) FURTHER OUR CURRENT UNDERSTANDING OF EUROPA S GAS ENVIRONMENT AND 3) COMPLEMENT STUDIES THAT ARE CURRENTLY UNDERWAY WITH HST.
