THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS WORK IS TO CREATE A GLOBALLY CONSISTENT DATASET OF LIGHTNING BY 1) LINKING THE GOES-R GEOSTATIONARY LIGHTNING MAPPER (GLM) RESEARCH AND USER COMMUNITIES WITH THE CORRESPONDING MTG LIGHTNING IMAGER (LI) COMMUNITIES 2) REFINING THE DETECTION EFFICIENCY AND FALSE ALARM RATES OF EACH GEOSTATIONARY INSTRUMENT 3) USING THE OVERLAPPING FIELD OF VIEW (FOV) REGION TO DETERMINE PARALLAX CORRECTIONS FOR THE EXTREME EDGE OF EACH INSTRUMENT S FOV 4) DETERMINING THE GLM AND LI ABSOLUTE AMPLITUDE CALIBRATIONS 5) LEVERAGING THE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE OF THE PI WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE GLM ALGORITHMS CAL/VAL AND USER READINESS ACTIVITIES TO ENHANCE THE SAME ACTIVITIES OF THE LI COMMUNITY 6) SUGGESTING CHANGES TO BOTH SYSTEM ALGORITHMS TO IMPROVE BOTH DETECTION EFFICIENCY AND FALSE ALARM RATES ALONG WITH IMPROVEMENTS TO THE VARIOUS PARALLAX ALGORITHMS AND 7) SUGGESTING IMPROVEMENTS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF GEOSTATIONARY LIGHTNING DETECTOR HARDWARE AND FIRMWARE. THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE A MEANINGFUL CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LI AND GLM DATA PRODUCTS INCLUDING ALGORITHM DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING AND CALIBRATION/VALIDATION. THE PRIMARY BENEFIT OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE THE CREATION OF A CONSISTENT NEARLY GLOBAL LIGHTNING DATASET. FURTHER BENEFITS TO THE U.S. EARTH SCIENCE COMMUNITY WILL BE EASIER ACCESS TO THE GROUND AND LEO BASED LIGHTNING DATASETS FROM THE EUROPEAN EARTH SCIENCE COMMUNITY. THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO LEAD TO IMPROVED ALGORITHMS FOR GLM TO PROVIDE A BETTER LIGHTNING DATASET FOR THE U.S. EARTH SCIENCE COMMUNITY AND SUGGESTIONS FOR BETTER LIGHTNING SYSTEMS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION U.S. SCIENCE COMMUNITY GEOSTATIONARY LIGHTNING SENSORS.
