WE PROPOSE A THREE-YEAR EFFORT WITH THE GOAL OF RAISING THE TRL OF COMPACT LOW-POWER NEUTRON DETECTOR TECHNOLOGY SUCH THAT IT MAY BE PROPOSED FOR CUBESAT MISSIONS THROUGH THE HTIDES/SOFTWARE AND EXPERTISE AND BENEFITS STRONGLY FROM THE EXPERIENCE GAINED FROM OUR ONGOING WORK (GSFC AND UNH) AS WELL AS THE SONTRAC AND NSPECT PROGRAMS AT UNH.YEAR 1 - GSFC WILL IMMEDIATELY BEGIN DESIGN WORK OF THE PROTOTYPE FEE FOR THE PLANACON MCP-PMT. HARDWARE (PLANACON MCP-PMT) WILL BE PURCHASED (GSFC ALREADY OWNS ONE PLANACON) SIMULATIONS OF THE SIGNAL PROCESSING WILL BEGIN AND THE ELECTRONICS BOARDS DESIGNED AND FABRICATED. THE PROTOTYPE FEE BOARD WILL READOUT OUT A SMALL SUBSET OF THE PLANACON (8X8 ANODES) BOTH AS INDIVIDUAL ANODES AND AS CHARGE DIVIDER ANODE (X-Z) READOUT. THE PLANACON WILL BE INTERFACED WITH A CORNER OF THE EXISTING 5X5X5 CM BUNDLE FROM UNH. GROUND-LEVEL MUONS WILL BE USED TO TEST THE READOUT PERFORMANCE AND COMPARE TO SIMULATIONS. DATA ANALYSIS ALGORITHM DEVELOPMENT (TRACK RECONSTRUCTION) WILL BEGIN. UNH WILL DEVELOP A TEST FIBER BUNDLE.YEAR 2 - GSFC WILL CONSTRUCT A COMPLETE 64-STRIP FEE BOARD TO READOUT THE ENTIRE PLANACON MCP-PMT. GROUND LEVEL MUONS WILL BE USED TO EVALUATE PROTON TRACKING USING CHARGE DIVIDER ANODE (X-Z) READOUT. AN ADDITIONAL PLANACON MCP-PMT WILL BE PURCHASED AND ADDITIONAL FEE BOARDS DESIGNED TO READOUT THE ORTHOGONAL PLANE OF FIBERS PROVIDING 3-D NEUTRON KINEMATIC RECONSTRUCTION. WE WILL USE GROUND LEVEL MUONS TO TEST AND REFINE THE 3-D PARTICLE TRACKING. A PROTOTYPE FIBER BUNDLE WILL BE CONSTRUCTED AT UNH FOR INITIAL TESTING.YEAR 3 - THE FBNT PROTOTYPE WILL BE TAKEN TO CROCKER LABORATORY AT UC DAVIS FOR TESTING WITH THE PROTON (AND NEUTRON) BEAM TRACK RECONSTRUCTION ROUTINES WILL BE REFINED AND RESULTS COMPARED WITH SIMULATIONS. CONTINUE TO TEST AND REFINE FIBER BUNDLE DEVELOPMENT AT UNH.
