AS THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR FOR THIS PROPOSAL DR. DRISS TAKIR WILL WORK DIRECTLY WITH THE NIRS3 INSTRUMENT TEAM TO INVESTIGATE THE COMPOSITIONAL IMPLICATION OF HYDRATED SILICATES AND ORGANICS ON (162173) 1999 JU3 (HENCEFORTH JU3) BY CONDUCTING THESE SPECIFIC TASKS: (1) MEASURE SPECTRA OF VARIOUS CARBONACEOUS CHONDRITE METEORITES AND ENDMEMBER HYDRATED SILICATES UNDER ASTEROID-LIKE CONDITIONS (VACUUM AND ELEVATED TEMPERATURES) TO DEVELOP SPECTRAL PARAMETERS OF MINERALS AND CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS THAT WE EXPECT TO DETECT ON JU3 AND (2) PROCESS NIRS3 SPECTRAL DATA AND THERMALLY AND PHOTOMETRICALLY CORRECT JU3 S SPECTRA TO CREATE SITE-SPECIFIC AND GLOBAL MAPS OF THE MINERALOGICAL AND CHEMICAL RELATIVE ABUNDANCES ACROSS JU3 S SURFACE IN ADDITION TO CREATING ALBEDO MAPS. PI TAKIR HAS TWO OBJECTIVES FOR THIS PROPOSAL: (1) A SHORT-TERM OBJECTIVE TO DILIGENTLY SUPPORT THE HAYABUSA2 SCIENCE TEAM IN PLANNING AND SUCCESSFUL SAMPLING AND LANDING SITE CHARACTERIZATION AND SELECTION AND (2) A LONG-TERM OBJECTIVE TO SUPPORT THE SCIENCE TEAM TO ACHIEVE THE SCIENTIFIC GOALS SET BY THE MISSION TO ILLUMINATE THE ORIGIN EVOLUTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF VOLATILES AND ORGANICS ON THE SURFACE OF JU3 AND IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM. THIS INVESTIGATION WILL ALSO HELP PUTTING THE ANALYSIS OF THE RETURNED (LOCALIZED) SAMPLE FROM JU3 IN A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE.
