BY ARTIFICIALLY CLOSING THE INDONESIAN THROUGHFLOW (ITF) IDEALIZED FORCED OCEAN AND COUPLED MODELS HAVE SUGGESTED THE IMPORTANT IMPACT THAT THE INDIAN OCEAN (IO) HAS ON THE PACIFIC VIA THE ITF.AS A SUBSET OF THE ABOVE RESEARCH WE PLAN TO ASSESS THE IMPACT ON COUPLED PREDICTIONS OF A CHANGING INDO-PACIFIC OBSERVING SYSTEM USING AVAILABLE SATELLITE AND IN SITU OBSERVATIONS. IN THE CONTEXT OF THE PLANNING FOR THE TROPICAL PACIFIC OBSERVING SYSTEM (TPOS) 2020 WE WILL ASSESS THE IMPACT OF SALINITY OBSERVATIONS (E.G. ARGO TAO/RAMA SMOS AQUARIUS AND SMAP) ALONG WITH OTHERVARIOUS ROUTINE SATELLITE AND IN SITU OBSERVATIONS USING OBSERVING SYSTEM SIMULATION EXPERIMENTS IN THE IO. SPECIFICALLY WE PLAN TO DETERMINE THE IMPACT ON THE SALT/HEAT/MOMENTUM BUDGETS OF ASSIMILATING SL SST AND SSS FROM SATELLITE AND TZ AND SZ FROM IN SITU OBSERVATIONS (E.G. ARGO AND RAMA).
