BLOWING SNOW (BLSN) IS A COMMON PHENOMENON IN THE POLAR REGIONS. OVER LARGE AREAS OF EAST ANTARCTICA IT OCCURS OVER 60 PERCENT OF THE TIME DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. PREVIOUS BLSN STUDIES HAVE BEEN MAINLY FOCUSING ON ITS IMPACTS ON THE ICE SHEET MASS BALANCE POLAR HYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES AND LIDAR SURFACE ELEVATION MEASUREMENTS. OUR RECENT PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS REVEALS THE FIRST OBSERVATIONAL EVIDENCE THAT BLSN CAN SUBSTANTIALLY AFFECT THE OUTGOING LONGWAVE RADIATION (OLR) OVER THE ANTARCTIC ICE SHEET. UNDER CLOUD FREE CONDITIONS THE PERSISTENCE OF STRONG SURFACE BASED INVERSIONS (SBI) RESULTS IN A WARMER LAYER ABOVE THE SURFACE. THE PRESENCE OF BLSN INCREASES THE EMISSIVITY OF THE LAYER HENCE RESULTS IN A LARGER OLR.CLIMATE IN THE POLAR REGIONS IS SENSITIVE TO THE RADIATIVE FLUX. THE IMPACT OF BLSN ON OLR MAY AFFECT CLIMATE IN THE REGIONAL AND EVEN GLOBAL SCALE WHICH IS CURRENTLY NOT STUDIED. BUILDING ON OUR TEAMS TRACK RECORD ON BLSN ANALYSIS WE PROPOSE TO STUDY THE LONG WAVE RADIATIVE EFFECT OF BLSN OVER THE ANTARCTIC ICE SHEET THROUGH A SYNERGETIC ANALYSIS OF CALIPSO CERES MODIS AND ECMWFREANALYSIS DATA. PREVIOUSLY OUR TEAM HAS DEVELOPED AN INNOVATIVE METHOD TO DETECT BLSN WITH CALIPSO OBSERVATIONS. FOR THE FIRST TIME WE ARE ABLE TO ANALYZE BLSN ON A GLOBAL SCALE.WITH CALIPSO OBSERVATIONS AS THE PRIMARY DATA SOURCE THE PROPOSED WORK INCLUDES MULTIPLE SENSOR DATA SYNERGY ANTARCTIC BOUNDARY LAYER INVERSION ANALYSIS AND RADIATIVE TRANSFER MODELING. THE PROPOSED TASKS INCLUDE: (1) RECLASSIFICATION OF THE PIXELS ALONG THE CALIPSO TRACKS OVER ANTARCTICA INTO CLEAR CLOUDY AND BLSN CATEGORIES FOR THE ENTIRE CALIPSO MISSION; (2) INVESTIGATION OF THE OLR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CLEAR SKY AND BLSN SKY FOR CLOUD FREE PIXELS WITH COLLOCATED CERES AND CALIPSO DATA; (3) RADIATIVETRANSFER MODELING OF THE BLSN LONGWAVE RADIATIVE EFFECT WITH ATMOSPHERE PROFILES FROM ECMWF REANALYSIS AND DROPSONDE DATA FROM FIELD CAMPAIGNS.THE RESULT OF THIS STUDY WILL BE A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE LONGWAVE RADIATIVE EFFECT OF ANTARCTIC BLSN AND ITS SEASONAL AND ANNUAL VARIABILITY WHICH IS AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF THE ANTARCTIC RADIATION BUDGET. THE PROPOSED WORK DIRECTLY RESPONDS TO THE SOLICITATION FOR DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE USES OF CALIPSO AND/OR CLOUDSAT DATA AND FOR STUDIES USE OF CALIPSO AND/OR CLOUD SAT IN UNDERSTANDING THE ATMOSPHERES THREE DIMENSIONAL RADIATIVE ENVIRONMENT.
