IN THIS PROPOSAL OUR INTENT IS TO ADVANCE SCIENCE OF SNOWFALL RATES RETRIEVED FROM GPM KU KA AND KU KA BAND RADARS. USING A LARGE DATA SET OF COLLOCATED INSITU OBSERVATIONS WITH OVERFLYING AIRCRAFT OUTFITTED WITH KU AND KA BAND RADARS DESIGNED TO MIMIC THE WAVELENGTHS OFRADARS ONBOARD THE GPM SATELLITE OUR RESEARCH TEAM WILL CONDUCT AN EVALUATION OF GPM RESEARCHERS RETRIEVAL ALGORITHMS. TO THE GROUP OF RESEARCHERS IN THE US AND JAPAN IDENTIFIED TO DATE AND WILL PROVIDE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS TEMPERATURE HEIGHT AND CLOUD TOP HEIGHT.THE INSTITUTE WILL THEN EVALUATE THEIR FORWARD MODELING OF THE PSD TO YIELD REFLECTIVITIES AT THESE WAVELENGTHS; WE WILL HAVE THE MEASURED REFLECTIVITIES. THE INSTITUTE WILL COMPARE THEIR FORWARD MODELED VALUES TO THE MEASURED ONES TO IDENTIFY PROBLEMS WITH THEIR ASSUMED BACKSCATTER CROSS SECTIONS. THE INSTITUTE WILL THEN PROVIDE THOSE RESEARCHERS WITH A DIFFERENT SET OF MEASURED REFLECTIVITIES FROM THE COLLOCATIONS AND ASK THEM TO RETRIEVE THE SNOWFALL RATE. THE INSTITUTE WILL THEN COMPARE THESE SNOWFALLRATES TO THOSE THAT DERIVE FROM THE COLLOCATED INSITU PARTICLE PROBE DATA. THE INVESTIGATORS WILL BEIDENTIFIED ANONYMOUSLY. THE RESULTS OF OUR STUDY WILL BE PROVIDED TO OUR NASA SPONSOR. THE INTENT IS THAT THIS EFFORT WILL LEAD TO A JOURNAL ARTICLE.
