AS AN UPPER MIDWESTERN STATE NORTH DAKOTA FACES A VARIETY OF CHALLENGES IN NURTURING AND EXPANDING ITS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY COMPETENCY. ITS RELATIVELY SMALL POPULATION AND THE DOMINANCE OF AGRICULTURE AS A SOURCE OF EMPLOYMENT AND INCOME HAVE INHIBITED NORTH DAKOTA'S ABILITY TO COMPETE FOR AND OBTAIN A PROPORTIONATE SHARE OF FEDERAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY DOLLARS. THE MOST RECENT GROWTH OF THE OIL INDUSTRY IN THE STATE IS WITNESSING A FURTHER CHALLENGE IN THE FORM OF AN URGENT AND ENHANCED NEED FOR TRAINED WORKFORCE IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. IF NORTH DAKOTA AND OTHER TRADITIONALLY AGRICULTURAL STATES ARE TO SUCCEED IN DIVERSIFYING AND GROWING THEIR ECONOMIES THEN IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO TRAIN ITS WORKFORCE IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OCCUPATIONS THAT WILL BE OF VALUE TO ACADEMIA THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRY - AS WELL AS CONTRIBUTING TO THE GENERAL SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL LITERACY OF ITS POPULATION.
