NEWLY RELEASED DATA FROM NASA S WIDE FIELD INFRARED EXPLORER (WISE) MISSION WILL BE ANALYZED TO SEARCH FOR RR LYRAE STARS THAT CAN BE ASSOCIAT D WITH STELLAR DEBRIS STREAMS FROM DISRUPTED STAR CLUSTERS AND DWARF GALAXIES. THESE STREAMS PROVIDE A FOSSIL RECORD OF THE INDIVIDUAL ACCRETION EVENTS THAT LED TO THE BUILDUP OF THE MILKY WAY GALAXY AND ARE ALSO EXQUISITELY SENSITIVE PROBES OF THE GRAVITATIONAL FIELD AND HENCE THE GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION OF DARK MATTER SURROUNDING THE GALAXY. WITH GOOD SENSITIVITY ENORMOUS SKY COVERAGE AND A CADENCE WELL SUITED TO THE DETECTION OF RR LYRAE DATA TAKEN BY WISE AT 3.4 AND 4.6 MICRONS WILL ENABLE A SYSTEMATIC SEARCH FOR MANY THOUSANDS OF SUCH STANDARD CANDLES WITHIN 16 KPC OF THE SUN A RADIUS WHICH ALSO CONTAINS MOST OF THE STELLAR DEBRIS STREAMS DISCOVERED TO DATE. WISE CAN IDENTIFY RR LYR WITH AN AMPLITUDE OF 0.2 MAG DOWN TO ~15.0 MAGNITUDE AT 3.4 MICRONS. THE ACCURATE DISTANCES THAT ONLY RR LYRAE STARS CAN PROVIDE WILL ENABLE US TO PUT MUCH TIGHTER CONSTRAINTS ON ORBIT SHAPES AND HENCE THE GALACTIC DARK MATTER DISTRIBUTION THAN HAS PREVIOUSLY BEEN POSSIBLE. THE WISE ALL-SKY RELEASE SOURCE CATALOG CONTAINS APPROXIMATELY 8 MILLION SOURCES THAT HAVE BEEN FLAGGED AS LIKELY FLUX VARIABLES. WE WILL CONSTRUCT THE WISE VARIABLE SOURCE DATABASE THAT BUILDS UPON THE BASIC VARIABILITY FLAGGING IN THE CATALOG TO IDENTIFY CANDIDATE RR LYRAE STARS IN THE DEBRIS STREAMS. THIS DATABASE WILL CONTAIN CONFIRMED VARIABLE SOURCES WITH THEIR LIGHT CURVES VARIABILITY PROPERTIES SUCH AS PERIODS AND AMPLITUDES WHEN APPROPRIATE AND CLASSIFICATIONS FROM FOURIER DECOMPOSITION. THIS DATABASE WILL BE SERVED BY THE NASA/IPAC INFRARED SCIENCE ARCHIVE AND WILL CONSTITUTE A VAST NEW RESOURCE FOR THE ASTRONOMICAL COMMUNITY.
