THIS IS A PROPOSAL REQUESTING THREE YEARS OF FUNDING TO CARRY OUT A COMBINED EXPERIMENTAL MODELING AND MICRO-BEAM ANALYTICAL STUDY INTO UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE AND ABUNDANCES OF THE MAGMATIC VOLATILES WATER CHLORINE FLUORINE AND SULFUR IN LUNAR MINERALS MELTS AND MAGMATIC SOURCE REGIONS. ALTHOUGH THE MOON IS DEPLETED IN VOLATILE ELEMENTS (INCLUDING MAGMATIC VOLATILES) THERE IS SIGNIFICANTEVIDENCE THAT MAGMATIC VOLATILES HAVE PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN LUNAR MAGMATIC PROCESSES. RECENTLY ONE OF THE MOST FRUITFUL AVENUES OF UNDERSTANDING LUNAR MAGMATIC VOLATILES HAS BEEN THROUGH THE STUDY OF THE MINERAL APATITE [CA5(PO4)3(F CL OH)] AND IT WILL BE THE PRIMARY PHASE FROM WHICH VOLATILE INFORMATION WILL BE OBTAINED FOR THE MOON IN THE PRESENT STUDY. THE PROPOSED INVESTIGATION WILL BE CONDUCTED THROUGH 3 MAJOR SCIENCE TASKS: (1) A COMBINED TEXTURAL AND MICRO-BEAM ANALYTICAL SURVEY (EPMA AND SIMS) OF APATITECOMPOSITIONS FROM HIGH-TI MARE BASALTS AND KREEP-BASALTS. (2) A COMBINED MICRO-BEAM ANALYTICAL SURVEY (EPMA AND SIMS) AND MODELING STUDY OF PHOSPHORUS CONTENTS IN PRISTINE LUNAR VOLCANIC GLASS BEADS RANGING IN COMPOSITION FROM VERY-LOW-TITANIUM (I.E. VLT GREEN GLASS) TO HIGH-TITANIUM (I.E. BLACK GLASS) (3) AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY INTO THE PARTITIONING BEHAVIOR OF FLUORINE CHLORINE HYDROXYL AND SULFUR (S2-) BETWEEN APATITE AND A KREEP BASALT (15386) OVER A RANGE OF RELEVANT PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE CONDITIONSAT LOW OXYGEN FUGACITY (RUN PRODUCTS WILL BE ANALYZED BY EPMA AND SIMS) THE THREE PROPOSED TASKS OUTLINED ABOVE ARE HIGHLY RELEVANT TO BOTH NASA'S OBJECTIVES FOR EXPLORING THE SOLAR SYSTEM AND THE GOALS FOR THE LASER PROGRAM. ALL TASKS PROPOSED ARE HIGHLY RELEVANT TO THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF THE LASER PROGRAM WHICH IS "TO CONDUCT A SUITE OF LUNAR SCIENCE INVESTIGATIONS SPANNING THE CONTINUUM FROM BASIC SCIENCE TO APPLIED EXPLORATION SCIENCE". SPECIFICALLY THE TASKS OUTLINED HERE COMBINE SAMPLE ANALYSIS MODELING AND EXPERIMENTATION TO AID IN DETERMINING "LUNAR EVOLUTION" "PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY OF THE LUNAR INTERIOR" "PETROGENESIS OF LUNAR MATERIALS" AND "LUNAR VOLCANOLOGICAL HISTORY AND PROCESSES" AS OUTLINED IN "C.8 SECTION 1.2 FUNDAMENTAL (BASIC) LUNAR SCIENCE."FURTHERMORE THE PROPOSED TASKS ARE RELEVANT TO "RESOURCE PROSPECTING" AS OUTLINED IN "C.8 SECTION 1.3 LUNAR EXPLORATION APPLIED SCIENCE."
