STARS ARE THE BASIC UNITS OF THE UNIVERSE AND YET AFTER DECADES OF RESEARCH MUCH ABOUT THE PHYSICAL PROCESSES REGULATING STAR FORMATION REMAINS POORLY UNDERSTOOD. LARGE SCALE OBSERVATIONS OF STAR FORMING REGIONS PROVIDE COUNTS OF THE NUMBER OF DENSE CLOUDS EACH OF WHICH WILL EVENTUALLY EVOLVE INTO TENS TO HUNDREDS OF STARS. HOWEVER WHEN SIMPLE MODELS OF GRAVITATIONAL COLLAPSE ARE APPLIED TO THE CLOUDS THEY YIELD A GALACTIC STAR FORMATION RATE (SFR) MANY TIMES LARGER THAN WHAT IS ACTUALLY OBSERVED. SOME PROCESS OR COMBINATION OF PROCESSES MUST BE SLOWING THE COLLAPSE OF THE CLOUDS. THE TWO PREVAILING THEORIES INVOLVE TURBULENCE WHICH PREVENTS THE EFFECTIVE DISSIPATION OF ENERGY AND GALACTIC MAGNETIC FIELDS WHICH ARE CAPTURED AND SQUEEZED BY THE COLLAPSING CLOUD PROVIDING A MECHANISM FOR MECHANICAL SUPPORT. DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN WHICH OF THE MANY POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS OF THESE PROCESSES REGULATES GALACTIC STAR FORMATION WILL REQUIRE MEASUREMENT OF THE MAGNETIC FIELDS IN THESE CLOUDS. AS AN NSTRF FELLOW I WILL USE THE NEW POLARIZED BALLOON-BORNE LARGE APERTURE SUBMILLIMETER TELESCOPE (SUPER BLASTPOL) TO MAKE GROUNDBREAKING MEASUREMENTS OF POLARIZED DUST EMISSION IN GALACTIC STAR FORMING REGIONS. I WILL USE THE DURATION OF MY NSTRF AWARD TO DESIGN A NEW DETECTOR ARRAY FOR SUPER BLASTPOL BASED ON KINETIC INDUCTANCE DETECTORS (KIDS). ARRAYS OF KIDS CAN BE READ OUT ON A SINGLE FEEDLINE BY TUNING EACH KID TO A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT RESONANCE FREQUENCY; GIVING KIDS BUILT-IN MULTIPLEXING CAPABILITIES. THOUSANDS OF KIDS CAN BE FABRICATED ONTO A SINGLE LAYER COUPLED TO ONE FEEDLINE AND THEN AMPLIFIED BY A CRYOGENIC HEMT (HIGH ELECTRON MOBILITY TRANSISTOR) AMPLIFIER. DURING READOUT A COMB OF RESONANT TONES IS GENERATED AND FED TO THE COMMON LINE THAT IS COUPLED TO THE RESONATORS. THIS ENTIRE SYSTEM IS CONTROLLED BY A RECONFIGURABLE OPEN ARCHITECTURE COMPUTING HARDWARE (ROACH) BOARD SYSTEM FOR WHICH I WILL WORK TO DEVELOP THE SOFTWARE AND FIRMWARE. BECAUSE OF THIS INHERENT MULTIPLEXING KIDS ARE A LEADING DETECTOR CANDIDATE FOR FUTURE FIR/SUB-MM SATELLITE MISSIONS. THIS PUTS SUPER BLASTPOL IN THE UNIQUE POSITION OF BEING NOT ONLY A FULLY INTEGRATED SYSTEMS LEVEL INSTRUMENT IN ITS OWN RIGHT BUT ALSO A PATH-FINDER MISSION FOR FUTURE SATELLITE-BASED MISSIONS.
