EXPLORING LUNAR VOLATILE RESERVOIRS; ANALYSIS SAMPLING PRESERVATION AND CURATION.ALTHOUGH THE MOON IS CONSIDERED TO BE A VOLATILE-POOR PLANETARY BODY RELATIVE TO THE EARTH AND MARS IT PROVIDES UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT TO BETTER UNDERSTAND PLANETARY VOLATILE RESERVOIRS AND VOLATILE ELEMENT TRANSPORT ON AIRLESS PLANETARY BODIES. LARGE-SCALE LUNAR FEATURES SUCH AS H ANOMALIES WITHIN PERMANENTLY SHADED CRATERS AT THE MOON'S POLES AND LARGE VOLATILE-RICH PYROCLASTIC DEPOSITS SUCH AS THOSE AT THE ARISTARCHUS PLATEAU IMPLY THE EXISTENCE OF VOLATILE RESERVOIRS ON THE LUNAR SURFACE. SUCH DEPOSITS COULD BE A VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR HUMAN ACTIVITIES ON THE MOON'S SURFACE. USING NEW ANALYTICAL APPROACHES AND UNIQUE LUNAR SAMPLES WE WILL ADDRESS THE BEHAVIOR OF LUNAR VOLATILES AND THEIR PRESERVATION IN RETURNED LUNAR SAMPLES THROUGH THREE TASKS THAT HAVE PROFOUND IMPLICATIONS FOR BOTH THE SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF VOLATILE RESERVOIRS ON THE MOON AND POTENTIAL RESOURCES FOR HUMAN EXPLORATION-HABITATION OF THE MOON.TASK 1 FOCUSES ON THE BEHAVIOR OF VOLATILE ELEMENTS IN THE LUNAR REGOLITH USING SULFUR ISOTOPIC AND VOLATILE ELEMENT VARIATIONS IN TROILITE IN LUNAR REGOLITH THAT EXHIBITS FRACTIONATED S ISOTOPIC COMPOSITIONS AND IN REPLACEMENT AND VEIN TROILITE. FURTHER WE WILL ANALYZE THE BEHAVIOR OF CL DURING REGOLITH EVOLUTION THROUGH VARIATIONS IN CL ISOTOPIC COMPOSITIONS. TASK 2 FOCUSES UPON THE RECORD OF INDIGENOUS MANTLE VOLATILES PRESERVED IN LUNAR PYROCLASTIC DEPOSITS. THIS HAS PROFOUND IMPLICATIONS FOR THE ORIGIN OF THE MOON THE NATURE AND EFFECT OF VOLATILES IN THE LUNAR MANTLE AND THE TRANSFER OF VOLATILES FROM THE LUNAR MANTLE TO THE MOON'S SURFACE. WE WILL APPROACH THIS TASK BY INVESTIGATING THE DISTRIBUTION OF H IN PYROCLASTIC GLASSES THE COMPOSITION AND MINERALOGY OF VOLATILE COATINGS ON VOLCANIC GLASS BEADS AND THE CL ISOTOPIC COMPOSITION OF MARE BASALTS AND VOLATILE COATINGS ON LUNAR VOLCANIC GLASSES. FINALLY USING MANY OF THE ABOVE ANALYTICAL APPROACHES AND UNIQUELY STORED APOLLO SAMPLES WE WILL EXAMINE THE EFFECT OF ALTERNATIVE SAMPLE COLLECTION STORAGE AND CURATION APPROACHES ON THE VOLATILE ELEMENT RECORD IN LUNAR SAMPLES TO PROVIDE INSIGHTS INTO SAMPLING AND HANDLING TECHNOLOGIES REQUIRED FOR THE FUTURE COLLECTION PRESERVATION AND RETURN OF LUNAR VOLATILES.
