COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY, 2707-1561 NEW AWARD DE-FOA-0002707(MINER) PROJECT TITLE: INNOVATIVE STIRRED MEDIA MILL REACTOR FOR COMBINED REACTIVE COMMINUTION AND MINERAL DISSOLUTION INTEGRATED WITH ELECTROCHEMICAL SEPARATION OF METALS AND PGMS AND CARBON MINERALIZATION (CRITICAL SMM-E) WORK TOGETHER TO MINIMIZE POTENTIAL BOTTLENECKS OR EFFICIENCY REDUCTION IN ANY OF THE METAL RECOVERY STEPS. TO ACHIEVE THE ARPA-E MINER GOALS OF 50% REDUCTION IN COMMINUTION ENERGY USAGE AND NET-ZERO OR NEGATIVE EMISSIONS, WE PROPOSE THE INTEGRATION OF THE UNIQUE REACTOR DESIGN WITH RENEWABLE-ENERGY-DRIVEN CO2 SEQUESTRATION AND ELECTROCHEMICAL SEPARATION TECHNOLOGY FOR THE VALORIZATION OF ENERGY-RELATED CRITICAL METALS SUCH AS COBALT, NICKEL, COPPER, AND PGMS.
