THIS COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT IS AWARDED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS AWARD ADDRESSES THE CHALLENGING PROBLEMS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MANUFACTURING PROCESSES (TOPIC 3) FOR ULTRAHIGH TEMPERATURE REFRACTORY METAL ALLOYS (RMA). IN PARTICULAR, INCREASED ENERGY EFFICIENCY WITH HIGHER OPERATING TEMPERATURES IN TURBINE APPLICATIONS IS SOUGHT. HOWEVER, THE PROCESSING OF RMAS TO MANUFACTURE DIMENSIONALLY CONTROLLED SHAPES SUCH AS A TURBINE AIRFOIL IN A COMMERCIALLY COST-EFFECTIVE WAY IS CHALLENGING. TRADITIONAL PROCESSING SUCH AS CASTING AND CONVENTIONAL POWDER METALLURGY (PM) EITHER REQUIRE SPECIALIZED FACILITIES OR MULTIPLE STEPS THAT ARE COSTLY AND DIFFICULT TO SCALE-UP.
