NEW AWARD TO UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN CONTROL NO. 2998-1549 DE-FOA-0002998:(ULTRAFAST) PROJECT TITLE: DIAMOND PCSS: DIAMOND PHOTOCONDUCTIVE SEMICONDUCTOR SWITCHES. THIS PROJECT PROPOSES A FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE IN INTRINSIC GRID PROTECTION VIA COMBINING THREE INNOVATION AREAS: (1) DIAMOND PHOTOCONDUCTIVE SEMICONDUCTOR SWITCH, (2) LIGHT TRIGGER SOURCE, AND (3) ULTRA-HIGH-VOLTAGE PACKAGING, TO MEET THE PROGRAM GOALS AND ACTIVELY LIMIT FAULTS TO A NOMINAL VALUE. DIAMOND PCSS, WITH TEAM MEMBERS’ COMPLEMENTARY EXPERTISE, WILL LEAD THE DESIGN OF NEXT-GENERATION ELECTRICITY GRID PROTECTION USING A NOVEL, BOTTOM-UP APPROACH.
