THIS COMPETITIVE COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT FOR A RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECT ENTITLED, “THE RENEWTHANOL PROCESS: CO2-DERIVED ETHANOL PRODUCTION VIA TANDEM ELECTRO- AND THERMO-CATALYTIC CONVERSIONS” IS AWARDED TO NEW YORK UNIVERSITY UNDER ARPA-E FOA NUMBER DE-FOA-0003234, GRID-FREE RENEWABLE ENERGY ENABLING NEW WAYS TO ECONOMICAL LIQUIDS AND LONG-TERM STORAGE (GREENWELLS) AND APPLICATION CONTROL NUMBER 3234-1563. THE PROJECT AIMS TO DEMONSTRATE STABLE PRODUCTION OF ETHANOL POWERED DIRECTLY BY VARIABLE RENEWABLE ENERGY. IT LEVERAGES INNOVATIONS IN ELECTROCATALYSTS, DYNAMIC ELECTROLYZER OPERATION, AND INTEGRATION WITH PROPRIETARY THERMOCATALYTIC REACTORS. TECHNOECONOMIC AND LIFE CYCLE ANALYSIS WILL GUIDE OPTIMIZATION OF THE PROCESS DESIGN AND OPERATION. THE FINAL DELIVERABLE IS A PROTOTYPE CONVERTING CO2 INTO 30 MJ/DAY OF ETHANOL USING AN INTERMITTENT ENERGY PROFILE MATCHING THAT IS OUTLINED IN THE GREENWELLS FUNDING OPPORTUNITY. THE PROCESS TARGETS AN ENERGY EFFICIENCY OVER 50%, MULTI-PASS CARBON YIELD FOR LIQUIDS OVER 70%, AND STEADY-STATE YIELD LOSSES UNDER 2% AFTER DYNAMIC OPERATION.
