HYDROGEN IS A SMALL MOLECULE THAT CAN LEAK OF STORAGE CONTAINERS, PIPELINES AND ESCAPE INTO THE ATMOSPHERE RAPIDLY. THE NUMBER OF SUCH LEAKS WILL INCREASE DUE TO THE GROWING HYDROGEN DEMAND. EXCESS HYDROGEN IN THE ATMOSPHERE INDIRECTLY INCREASES METHANE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS, LEADING TO GLOBAL WARMING. SO, ACCURATE SENSORS THAT CAN DETECT HYDROGEN IN PARTS PER BILLION (PPB) IS NEEDED. BUT AVAILABLE HYDROGEN SENSORS TODAY CANNOT DETECT PPB-HYDROGEN WHEN CONSIDERING COST AND PERFORMANCE. PPB-HYPERS SOLVES THIS BY USING SENSORS THAT ARE ULTRA-SENSITIVE TO PPB AMOUNTS OF HYDROGEN GAS, WITHOUT ANY INTERFERENCE FROM OTHER GASES THAT ARE PRESENT IN THE ATMOSPHERE. THIS PROJECT SOLVES THIS, BY DEVELOPING A PARTS-PER-BILLION HYDROGEN EMISSIONS REPORTING SYSTEM (‘PPB-HYPERS). PPB-HYPERS COMBINES ULTRA-SENSITIVE PROPRIETARY HYDROGEN SENSORS WITH ULTRA-RELIABLE LOW POWER RADIOS, TO PRODUCE WIRELESS HYDROGEN SENSOR NODES, COLLECTIVELY FORMING A WIRELESS ‘MESH’ NETWORK. EACH NODES DATA IS COMBINED WITH LOCAL WEATHER DATA AND WIRELESSLY SENT TO A REMOTE DATA SERVER. THE COMBINED DATA IS PARSED TO AN AI (ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE) THAT CAN ACCURATELY IDENTIFY ANY HYDROGEN LEAK OF ATLEAST 10KG/HR IN A 100 M X 100 M AREA, AND WITHIN 10 METERS OF THE LEAK. THE TOTAL COST TO INSTALL AND OPERATE ‘PPB-HYPERS’ IS EXPECTED TO BE LESS THAN $10,000 PER 100 METERS X 100 METER LOCATION. THROUGH THIS, THE PROJECT MEETS THE MAIN MISSION GOALS OF THE ARPA-E H2SENSE PROGRAM.
