THE PISCES PLASMA-MATERIALS-INTERACTION (PMI) PROGRAM AT UCSD OFFERS A UNIQUE LONG-STANDING CAPABILITY WITHIN THE US FOR THE EXPOSURE OF CANDIDATE FUSION-MATERIAL TARGETS TO DIVERTOR AND FIRST-WALL RELEVANT PLASMAS. AS A RESULT OF THE RECENT “CREATING HARDENED AND DURABLE FUSION FIRST WALL INCORPORATING CENTRALIZED KNOWLEDGE” (CHADWICK) FOA, THE PISCES PROGRAM HAS BEEN REQUESTED TO PROVIDE PMI SUPPORT TO SIX INSTITUTIONAL TEAMS FOR THEIR CATEGORY-A CHADWICK PROPOSALS. THE PISCES FACILITY IS THUS PROPOSED UNDER CATEGORY C, AS A CAPABILITY TEAM TO PROVIDE QUANTIFIED PMI TESTING AND EVALUATION OF FUSION MATERIALS FOR CATEGORY-A RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT. SPECIFICALLY, THE PISCES FACILITY WILL OFFER A RANGE OF PMI SERVICES TO CATEGORY A RECIPIENT TEAMS DEPENDING ON THEIR INDIVIDUAL SCOPE OF WORK REQUIREMENTS. THIS INCLUDES THE CAPABILITY TO EXPOSE CATEGORY A DEVELOPED TARGET MATERIALS TO HIGH-FLUX D, HE OR D-HE PLASMAS, WITH THE OPTION OF SEQUENTIAL OR SIMULTANEOUS HEAVY-ION DAMAGE IN THE TARGET SURFACE TO SIMULATE SOME OF THE EFFECTS OF NEUTRONS WITH THE NEW UCSD POSEIDON EXPERIMENT. IN ADDITION, CHARACTERIZATION SERVICES FOR PRE- AND POST-MORTEM TARGET-SURFACE COMPOSITION, THERMAL DIFFUSIVITY, PMI TARGET-SURFACE EROSION, AND TARGET HYDROGEN-RETENTION ARE AVAILABLE WITH PROPOSED MODEST HARDWARE UPGRADES THAT WOULD ALLOW FOR ACCURATE QUANTIFICATION OF THE SURFACE EROSION ON MULTI-ELEMENT TARGETS AND MORE RAPID EVALUATION OF HYDROGEN UPTAKE.
