THIS COMPETITIVE COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT FOR A RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECT ENTITLED, “COMPLEXION ENGINEERED NANOCRYSTALLINE TUNGSTEN ALLOY PLASMA FACING MATERIALS FOR LONG-PULSE TOKAMAK OPERATION” IS AWARDED TO THE JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY UNDER ARPA-E FOA NUMBER DE-FOA-0003240 (CHADWICK) AND CONTROL NUMBER 3240-1545. THE PURPOSE OF THIS AWARD IS TO ENABLE TRANSFORMATIONAL ADVANCES IN FUSION MATERIALS BY MANIPULATING ON THE ATOMIC SCALE THE LOCAL CHEMISTRY AND STRUCTURE OF INTERNAL INTERFACES IN TUNGSTEN ALLOYS. SPECIFICALLY, AMORPHOUS GRAIN BOUNDARY COMPLEXIONS WILL BE ENGINEERED INTO NANOSTRUCTURE TUNGSTEN USING A MULTI-SCALE, PREDICTIVE MATERIALS SCIENCE FRAMEWORK, WITH REAL-WORLD MATERIALS MADE BY INDUSTRIALLY-SCALABLE AND COST-EFFECTIVE TECHNIQUES AND PERFORMANCE TESTED BY STATE-OF-THE-ART MATERIALS CHARACTERIZATION AND MECHANICAL TESTING METHODS. THIS MATERIALS CONCEPT WILL SIMULTANEOUSLY ENABLE IRRADIATED MATERIALS TO HAVE HIGH TOUGHNESS AND VERY LITTLE SWELLING, WHILE MAINTAINING THE KEY PERFORMANCE METRICS OF TUNGSTEN THAT ARE NEEDED TO REMOVE HEAT AND REMAIN SAFE FOR USE. AS A WHOLE, THIS PROJECT WILL DEVELOP THE NOVEL MATERIALS NEEDED TO ENSURE THAT THE UNITED STATES MAINTAINS A LEAD IN DEVELOPING AND DEPLOYING FUSION ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES.
