THE CENTER FOR WIND ENERGY WILL BRING TOGETHER UNIVERSITY, CIVIC AND INDUSTRY PARTNERS TO CREATE AND TEST NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO REALIZE THE POTENTIAL OF WIND TO SUPPORT THE ENERGY NEEDS OF THE NATION. THE CENTER AIMS TO CONDUCT FUNDAMENTAL AND APPLIED RESEARCH PRIMARILY IN HIGH-FIDELITY SIMULATION OF WIND POWER SYSTEMS AND COMPONENTS, MEASUREMENT AND ANALYSIS OF WIND FIELDS FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND MODEL VALIDATION, WIND TUNNEL TESTING, CONTROL SYSTEM DESIGN FOR WIND TURBINES AND WIND FARMS, LARGE ROTOR DESIGN, GRID INTEGRATION AND ENERGY STORAGE. THE CENTER FOR WIND ENERGY WILL PROVIDE SOLUTIONS TO THE WIND POWER INDUSTRY AND WORK ON NOVEL TURBINE AND SYSTEM-LEVEL DESIGNS FOR LAND-BASED AND OFFSHORE WIND POWER. CURRENTLY, THE PARTICIPATING FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS ARE SCATTERED ACROSS THE CAMPUS, WHICH IMPACTS SYNERGISTIC ACTIVITIES. THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE ESSENTIAL RESOURCES TO RENOVATE AND EQUIP SPACE ADJACENT TO THE CAMPUS’ STATE-OF-THE-ART WIND TUNNEL TO CREATE LABORATORY AND CRITICAL OFFICE SPACE FOR MODELING, MEASUREMENTS AND CONTROL OF WIND ENERGY SYSTEMS. ONCE COMPLETE, THIS PROJECT WILL PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMUNITY OUTREACH SUCH AS HOSTING FUTURE SUMMER CAMPS FOR HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS AND TOURS TO THE BROADER DALLAS-FORT WORTH (DFW) COMMUNITY TO INCREASE AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF WIND ENERGY AS A SOURCE OF ELECTRICITY.
