THIS PROJECT PROPOSES AN INTEGRATED TIDAL DESALINATION SYSTEM THAT UTILIZES CENTRIFUGAL REVERSE OSMOSIS (CRO) FOR DESALINATION AND HYDROKINETIC TURBINES (HKT) FOR REQUIRED POWER GENERATION. AS IS EVIDENT FROM THIS DESCRIPTION, THE SYSTEM IS COMPOSED OF TWO MAJOR SUBCOMPONENTS: CRO AND HKT. THE CRO TECHNOLOGY TAKES ADVANTAGE OF CENTRIFUGAL FORCE TO GENERATE PRESSURE THAT OVERCOMES OSMOTIC PRESSURE, AND IT OPERATES NEAR THE THERMODYNAMIC LIMIT. IN THE CURRENT STATE-OF-ART, THE CONVENTIONAL RO UNIT IS PRESSURIZED THROUGH A HIGH-PRESSURE PUMP INTEGRATED INTO A ROTATING TURBINE SHAFT WITHOUT INTERMEDIATE ELECTRICAL CONVERSION. THE SPECIFIC PROJECT OBJECTIVES INCLUDE: • PROOF-OF-CONCEPT FOR THE CRO SYSTEM. • IN-DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF CRO HYDRODYNAMICS AND SEPARATION EFFICIENCY. • IN-DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF HKT POWER GENERATION CHARACTERISTICS WHEN INTEGRATED WITH CRO. • FULLY INTEGRATED PLATFORM THAT DEMONSTRATES THE ADVANTAGES OF THE HKT-CRO SYSTEM FOR RELIABLE, CONSISTENT, AND EFFICIENT MARINE-POWERED DESALINATION.
