THIS PROJECT PROPOSES A NATIONWIDE COLLABORATION BETWEEN INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIA TO PIONEER AN INDUSTRIAL-SCALE DEMONSTRATION OF ALTERNATIVE INJECTANT REFINING AND ELECTRO-MAGNETIC STIRRING (EMS) ELECTRIC ARC FURNACE (EAF) OPERATION IN THE U.S. AND CREATE A LANDMARK EXAMPLE FOR RELEVANT INDUSTRIAL PRACTICES WORLD-WIDE USING STATE-OF-THE-ART CFD MODELS, (LIFE-CYCLE ASSESSMENT) LCA & (TECHNO-ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT) TEA, LABORATORY TESTING, AND INDUSTRIAL DEMONSTRATION. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH REFLECTS A JOINT EXPLORATORY R&D EFFORT BETWEEN ACADEMIA AND INDUSTRY TO ENABLE COMPLETE DECARBONIZATION OF THE EAF PROCESS. WHEN COMPLETED, THE PROJECT WILL DEMONSTRATE THE FEASIBILITY OF REPLACING FOSSIL-CARBON USE IN THE EAF WITH ALTERNATIVE INJECTANTS TO REDUCE SCOPE ONE CO2 EMISSIONS WHILE MAINTAINING EXISTING QUALITY AND PRODUCTIVITY STANDARDS.
