THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO (1) CHARACTERIZE AND LEVERAGE TWO EXISTING OPEN-SOURCE WECS (LUPA, AND FOSWEC) FOR LONG-TERM USAGE BY THE MARINE ENERGY COMMUNITY; (2) DEMONSTRATE CO-DESIGN INFORMED PATHWAYS TO HARDWARE SELECTION AND LCOE REDUCTION FOR TWO DISTINCT WEC MORPHOLOGIES; AND (3) BROADLY DISSEMINATE THESE RESULTS THROUGH ACCESSIBLE AND INFORMATIVE MEANS TO MAXIMIZE STUDY IMPACT. IN THIS OVERARCHING GOAL, KEY CONTRIBUTIONS WILL BE (1) A DEMONSTRATION OF CO-DESIGN INFORMED COMPONENT MODIFICATION/SELECTION FOR EACH STUDIED WEC TO IMPROVE POWER CAPTURE AND REDUCE LCOE; (2) MODIFICATIONS TO THE WEC PLATFORMS TO BE ABLE TO CHARACTERIZE ENERGY LOSS AT EVERY CONVERSION STAGE (FROM WAVE TO WIRE); (3) MODIFICATIONS TO THE WEC PLATFORMS TO ALLOW FOR INDUSTRY, FFRDCS, AND ACADEMIA TO TEST CONTROL ALGORITHMS AND MOORING CONFIGURATIONS, AND VALIDATE THEIR HYDRODYNAMIC MODELS; (4) A VALIDATION OF THE IMPROVED POWER CAPTURE/SYSTEM COST REDUCTION THROUGH TANK TESTING OF MULTIPLE WEC CONFIGURATIONS; AND (5) DETAILED AND ACCESSIBLE RELEASE OF DATA, SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION, AND INSTRUCTIVE VIDEO LECTURES.
