THE PROPOSED WAVEJELX IS A NOVEL BIO-INSPIRED UUV CAPABLE OF BOTH HARVESTING WAVE POWER AND LEVERAGING THE PROPULSION BIOMECHANICS OF JELLYFISH. IT IS COMPOSED OF THE DOME AND SMART MATERIAL-BASED ARTIFICIAL MUSCLES. THE ARTIFICIAL MUSCLES ARE MULTI-LAYER COMPOSITE MATERIALS WHICH ACT AS BOTH ACTUATORS (DRIVEN BY SMA WIRES) AND ENERGY HARVESTERS (BASED ON PZT PATCHES). THESE ARTIFICIAL MUSCLES WILL BE COLLECTIVELY CONTROLLED TO ACHIEVE VARIED TASKS IN A DYNAMIC OCEAN ENVIRONMENT. THIS RESEARCH SEAMLESSLY INTEGRATES WAVE POWER HARVESTING CAPABILITIES WITH JELLYFISH BIOMECHANICS, CREATING A VERSATILE UNDERWATER ROBOTIC SYSTEM THAT CAN SIGNIFICANTLY EXTEND MISSION DURATION, REDUCE COSTS, AND ENABLE EFFICIENT, ROBUST, AND ADAPTIVE MISSION CONDUCTION IN HARSH OCEAN ENVIRONMENTS.
