CHARACTERIZATION OF SUBSURFACE OPPORTUNITIES TO ACCELERATE CARBON CAPTURE, UTILIZATION, AND STORAGE (CCUS) IN INDIANA THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO IDENTIFY FAVORABLE AREAS IN INDIANA THAT CAN SUPPORT COMMERCIAL-SCALE CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) SEQUESTRATION HUBS TO ACCELERATE THE ADOPTION OF THE TECHNOLOGY. THE SUBSURFACE OF INDIANA HAS MULTIPLE SALINE RESERVOIRS OF CAMBRIAN AND ORDOVICIAN AGE AT IDEAL DEPTHS FOR SEQUESTERING CARBON. THE INITIAL EMPHASIS WILL BE TO IDENTIFY AREAS OF THE STATE (FOCUS AREAS) THAT EXHIBIT FAVORABLE GEOLOGIC PARAMETERS FOR CARBON SEQUESTRATION. IN SUBSEQUENT TASKS OF THE PROJECT, THE FOCUS AREAS WILL BE EVALUATED IN MORE DETAIL TO QUANTIFY THE STORAGE CAPACITY OF THE SYSTEM, CHARACTERIZE THE SHALLOW SUBSURFACE TO UNDERSTAND RISK FROM UNINTENDED MIGRATION, AND DEVELOP A COMMUNITY BENEFITS PLAN FOR EACH AREA BASED ON COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT FEEDBACK. BY ACCOUNTING FOR BOTH SUBSURFACE INDICATORS AND SOCIETAL FACTORS, THE INDIANA GEOLOGICAL & WATER SURVEY (IGWS) AIMS TO HIGHLIGHT AREAS OF THE STATE WHERE THE DEPLOYMENT OF CO2 SEQUESTRATION TECHNOLOGY IS SUITABLE.
