TESTING AND DEVELOPING IONIC LIQUIDS FOR INTEGRATED LEACHING, EXTRACTION, SEPARATION AND REFINEMENT OF RARE EARTH ELEMENTS FROM COAL FLY ASH. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP A SMALL SET OF ROBUST, HIGH-PERFORMING IONIC LIQUIDS (ILS) (WHICH ARE RECYCLABLE, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY, AND SCALABLE) THAT CAN BE DEPLOYED IN AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM CAPABLE OF (1) EFFICIENT LEACHING/EXTRACTION/SEPARATION OF RARE-EARTH ELEMENTS (REES) FROM COAL FLY ASH (CFA) SOLIDS (GENERATING REE-RICH IL PHASES SEPARATED FROM MOST BULK AND TRACE ELEMENTS), AND (2) EFFECTIVE ELECTRODEPOSITION OF REE MIXTURE (TO ACHIEVE PURE INDIVIDUAL REE PRODUCTS).
