A TEAM OF RESEARCHERS (E.G., THOSE FROM KU, INL AND FS) WILL INTEGRATE COMPLEMENTARY EXPERTISE TO ESTABLISH THE SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND PARTNERSHIPS NEEDED TO DEVELOP A NOVEL, RESOURCE-EFFICIENT, INTENSIFIED, COST-EFFECTIVE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY BENIGN RECYCLING TECHNOLOGY FOR END-OF-LIFE PV SOLAR CELLS. OUR GOAL IS TO DEVELOP VIABLE PROCESSES TO (1) DELAMINATE THE CONSTITUENT GLASS LAYERS AVOIDING THE CRUSHING OF THE PANELS (M12, BUDGET PERIOD 1), (2) RECOVER THE EXPOSED ELEMENTS FROM THE FRONT GLASS PANEL BY OXIDATION WITH OZONE AND SUBSEQUENT ACID LEACHING (M18, BUDGET PERIOD 1), (3) DEMONSTRATE THE TECHNOLOGY AT TRL 4 (M24, BUDGET PERIOD 1) AND 5 (M36, BUDGET PERIOD 2), AND (4) MAKE AVAILABLE TECHNOECONOMIC AND LCA PACKAGE FOR SUBSEQUENT R&D ACTIVITIES AIMED AT COMMERCIALIZATION (M36, BUDGET PERIOD 2). OUR TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS WILL LEVERAGE LEADING INDUSTRY KNOWHOW AND RESEARCH EXPERTISE, FOCUSING INITIALLY ON CDTE-BASED PV CELLS THAT CURRENTLY COMMAND A SIZEABLE GLOBAL MARKET. PROCESS SIMULATIONS, TECHNO-ECONOMIC ANALYSES, AND LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENTS WILL IDENTIFY AND OVERCOME THE BARRIERS TO ACHIEVING SUSTAINABLE PROCESSES. OUTCOMES FROM THIS PROJECT WILL GUIDE PUBLIC POLICIES TO PROMOTE ECONOMIC GROWTH AND MARKET PENETRATION OF THE NEW MATERIALS, AND EDUCATE A DIVERSE WORKFORCE TO ENABLE ADVANCED PV RECYCLING TECHNOLOGIES.
