SUBSURFACE CARBON MINERALIZATION RESOURCES IN HAWAIIAN BASALT THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO PERFORM ASSESSMENT OF NATURAL MATERIALS THAT COULD BE USED IN A MINERALIZATION PROCESS TO STORE LARGE AMOUNTS OF CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) TO HELP MEET CARBON CAPTURE UTILIZATION AND STORAGE (CCUS) NEEDS. THIS WILL BE DONE THROUGH ASSESSMENT OF THE CO2 INJECTION AND MINERALIZATION POTENTIAL OF HAWAII ISLAND’S NORTHEAST SUBSURFACE BASALT FORMATIONS. A WELL THAT WAS DRILLED FOR THE HAWAII SCIENTIFIC DRILLING PROJECT (HSDP) WILL BE UTILIZED TO INVESTIGATE WHETHER BASALT FORMATIONS CAN ACCEPT LARGE AMOUNTS OF CO2 NEEDED FOR MINERALIZATION AT REASONABLE DEPTHS AND MINERALIZATION RATES. EVALUATION OF THIS BASALT FORMATION FOR MINERALIZATION WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH FIELD WELL TESTING, LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS, AND REACTION MODELING TO POPULATE PUBLICLY AVAILABLE DATABASES. SUB-RECIPIENT LAWRENCE BERKELEY NATIONAL LABORATORY WILL SUPPORT ALL PROJECT TASKS. SUB-RECIPIENT RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR THE EARTH (RITE) WILL PERFORM HYDROTHERMAL EXPERIMENTS ON SAMPLES FROM THE FIELD SITE WELL. THIS STUDY AND CORRESPONDING DATA ARE EXPECTED TO INFORM FUTURE ASSESSMENTS OF RESOURCE UTILITY AND VALUE FOR MINERALIZATION-BASED CO2 STORAGE.
