Abstract
[unreadable] DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): The long-term goal of this research is to understand the biophysical mechanisms that determine the response of auditory neurons to cochlear implant stimuli and to use this insight to refine cochlear implant stimulation strategies. The proposed research uses mathematical models of neural excitation to elucidate roles of the noise and gradedness mechanisms in determining the response of auditory neurons to cochlear implant stimuli. In particular, this research uses computational models to test the hypothesis that either gradedness or a combination of gradedness and noise mechanisms are sufficient to explain prominent features of the response of auditory neurons to electrical stimulation.
