IN THIS 5-YEAR RESEARCH PROGRAM, THE PRINCIPAL GOALS OF THE TC-COE AND THE PROPOSED SYNTHETIC, PHYSICAL, AND SPECTROSCOPIC STUDIES ARE: (1) TO DEFINE THE STRUCTURE, BONDING, AND REACTIVITY OF PLUTONIUM HYDRIDE COMPLEXES, AND (2) TO DISENTANGLE THE EFFECTS OF MEDIA, AUTORADIOLYTIC PROCESSES, AND COORDINATION CHEMISTRY IN CONTROLLING THE KINETICS AND THERMOCHEMISTRY OF AMERICIUM REDOX REACTIONS SUPPORTED BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL DETECTOR AND SPECTROSCOPIC INSTRUMENTATION. THESE GOALS SEEK TO DEFINE THE FUNDAMENTAL CRITERIA NECESSARY TO ADDRESS LONG-STANDING CHALLENGES IN UNDERSTANDING AND PREDICTING THE BEHAVIOR OF PUHX AND IN PREPARING PURE AMERICIUM FROM A VARIETY OF FEEDSTOCKS. THESE TWO RESEARCH GOALS ARE HIGHLY SYNERGISTIC (FIG. 1): THE REQUISITE INFRASTRUCTURE AS WELL AS METHODOLOGIES ARE RELATED AND CAN ONLY BE ADDRESSED BY THE PROPOSED, TIGHTLY-KNIT MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM.
