BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS NEW OPEN 2021 AWARD CONTROL NUMBER: 2459-2168 TITLE: GREEN LIGHT EMITTING DIODES FOR THE ULTIMATE SOLID-STATE LIGHTING THIS PROJECT PROPOSES A TECHNOLOGICAL SSL BREAKTHROUGH: DIRECT-EMITTING NOVEL GREEN LIGHT EMITTING DIODES TO ENABLE ACCELERATED SSL ADOPTION AND CREATE THE ULTIMATE SSL ROADMAP. ANNUALLY, LIGHTING ACCOUNTS FOR 15% OF THE GLOBAL ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION AND 5% OF THE WORLDWIDE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS. IN THE U.S. ALONE, THE TRANSITION TO SOLID-STATE LIGHTING (SSL) REDUCED LIGHTING-RELATED ENERGY NEEDS AND GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS BY APPROXIMATELY 25% (WITH RESPECT TO NON-SSL). THE AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD ENERGY CONSUMPTION FOR LIGHTING IS TO TRIPLE OVER THE NEXT FIFTY YEARS DUE TO POPULATION GROWTH AND INCREASE IN HOUSING SIZE. ACCELERATING THE TRANSITION TO ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING IS ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT INITIATIVES TO IMPROVE GLOBAL ECONOMY AND CLIMATE CONDITIONS.
