THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA BARBARA, NEW COMPETITIVE AGREEMENT, UNDER FOA NUMBER DE-FOA-0002459 (OPEN 2021) WITH PROJECT TITLE “QUANTIFYING THE POTENTIAL AND RISKS OF LARGE-SCALE MACROALGAE CULTIVATION AND PURPOSEFUL SEQUESTRATION AS A VIABLE CO2 REDUCTION (CDR) STRATEGY'' TO LIMIT WARMING BELOW 2°C THIS CENTURY, UCSB MUST IMPLEMENT A ROBUST CARBON DIOXIDE REDUCTION (CDR) STRATEGY. ONE CDR SOLUTION IS TO USE FAST-GROWING MACROALGAE TO CAPTURE CARBON AND SEQUESTER BIOMASS IN THE DEEP OCEAN. UCBS’S OBJECTIVES ARE TO PROVIDE A ROBUST PLAN TO REMOVE AT LEAST 0.1 GT CO2 YR-1 FROM THE ATMOSPHERE AND SEQUESTER IT FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS VIA OCEAN FARMING AND INJECTING THE MACROALGAL CROPS INTO THE OCEAN INTERIOR AND TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPACTS AND RISKS THAT THESE PERTURBATIONS MAY HAVE TO OCEAN ECOSYSTEMS AND THE BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLES THEY HELP REGULATE.
