THERMALLY INDUCED CALCIUM CARBONATE PRECIPITATION (TICP) AS A METHOD TO CONTROL HYDRAULIC PROPERTIES IN ENHANCED GEOTHERMAL SYSTEMS THE PROJECT HAS FOUR PRIMARY OBJECTIVES DESCRIBED IN MORE DETAIL IN THE SECTIONS TO FOLLOW AND THE TECHNICAL VOLUME. •OBJECTIVE 1. MEASURE TICP KINETICS AND USE TO CALIBRATE TOUGHREACT INPUT PARAMETERS. MSU WILL CONDUCT LABORATORY-SCALE EXPERIMENTS, WHICH WILL BE SIMULATED BY LBNL USING TOUGHREACT TO INCLUDE THE THERMODYNAMICS AND KINETICS OF THE TICP PROCESS. •OBJECTIVE 2. EVALUATE FRACTURE SURFACE ROUGHNESS ON THE DEPOSITION OF MINERAL. A COMBINATION OF EXPERIMENTATION AND MODELING WILL DETERMINE HOW THE ROUGHNESS OF FRACTURE SURFACES INFLUENCES TICP MINERAL DEPOSITION AND RESULTING PERMEABILITY REDUCTION. LBNL WILL INCORPORATE THE SURFACE ROUGHNESS DETERMINED BY MSU INTO A CONSISTENT SET OF PARAMETERS FOR THE REACTIVE SURFACE AREA FOR CARBONATE PRECIPITATION AND PARAMETERIZATION OF THE APERTURE-PERMEABILITY LAW. •OBJECTIVE 3. ASSESS THE PREFERENTIAL FRACTURE PERMEABILITY REDUCTION. MODELING WILL BE USED TO DETERMINE HOW PULSED INJECTION OF TICP REACTION FLUIDS CAN BE DESIGNED TO PREFERENTIALLY REDUCE THE PERMEABILITY IN HIGHER PERMEABLE PATHWAYS IN AN EGS-RELEVANT FRACTURED SYSTEM. MSU WILL CONDUCT VERIFICATION EXPERIMENTS IN THE LABORATORY. •OBJECTIVE 4. SIMULATE FIELD-SCALE DEMONSTRATION TEST. ONCE THE MSU EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS HAVE BEEN INCORPORATED, THE REFINED TOUGHREACT SIMULATOR WILL BE USED TO CONDUCT A SIMULATED FIELD DEMONSTRATION TEST AT THE DOE NEWBERRY EGS DEMONSTRATION PROJECT SITE IN OREGON. THE SIMULATIONS WILL FOCUS ON MODELS OF THE 2014 STIMULATION AT NEWBERRY VOLCANO, WHICH WERE MODELED USING TREACTMECH BY LBNL. THIS WILL DEMONSTRATE THE APPLICATION OF TICP FOR MODIFYING PERMEABILITY IN AN EGS AND THE ABILITY TO CONTROL THE LOCATION OF THE ZONE OF PRECIPITATION AND PERMEABILITY REDUCTION WITH DISTANCE FROM THE INJECTION WELL. A 90% REDUCTION OF PERMEABILITY WILL BE TARGETED.
