COEX IS A PRINTING TECHNIQUE THAT GENERATES PATTERNED COATINGS AND IS DESIGNED TO BE A DROP-IN REPLACEMENT FOR THE SLOT DIE APPROACH USED IN CONVENTIONAL BATTERY MANUFACTURING. INSTEAD OF A HOMOGENEOUS COATING, SUCH AS THOSE MADE BY SLOT DIE PRINTHEADS, THE COEX PRINTHEAD IS A MICROFLUIDIC STACK THAT TAKES TWO INPUT FLUIDS AND FINELY INTERDIGITATES THEM BEFORE DEPOSITING THEM IN A “STRIPED” PATTERN. COEX CAN BE USED TO CREATE STRUCTURED ELECTRODES, SPECIFICALLY BY FORMULATING THE FLUIDS SUCH THAT THEY GENERATE PERIODIC, FINE-SCALE REGIONS OF INCREASED IONIC CONDUCTIVITY THAT IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF THICK BATTERY ELECTRODES. PRIOR DEVELOPMENT WORK FOCUSED ONLY ON IMPROVING THE CATHODE, WHICH HAS THE GREATEST EFFECT ON DISCHARGE PERFORMANCE. WITH THE RECENT EMPHASIS ON FAST-CHARGING CAPABILITIES THAT ARE OFTEN LIMITED BY THE ANODE, THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS WORK OVER THE PROPOSED TWO 12-MONTH BUDGET PERIODS IS TO USE COEX PRINTING TECHNOLOGY TO CREATE POUCH CELLS WITH STRUCTURING IN BOTH THE ANODE AND CATHODE ELECTRODES TO ENABLE IMPROVED CHARGING PERFORMANCE AS WELL.
