THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, KNOXVILLE (UT), TOGETHER WITH THE UT CENTER FOR INDUSTRIAL SERVICES (CIS), PROPOSES THE EAST TENNESSEE INITIATIVE FOR SMART ENERGY MANAGEMENT (ETISE) TO PROMOTE THE INTEGRATION OF SMART MANUFACTURING FOR ENERGY MANAGEMENT IN THE NATION THROUGH TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND WORKFORCE TRAINING. THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF ETISE IS TO CREATE A REGIONAL MODEL FOR TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND WORKFORCE TRAINING TO EFFECTIVELY INTEGRATE SMART MANUFACTURING IN ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS INTO ENERGY-RELATED BUSINESS PRACTICES. THE RESULTING REGIONAL MODEL COULD BE APPLIED BY THE US DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY (DOE) TO OTHER REGIONS TO ENHANCE THE NATIONAL GOALS OF REDUCING MANUFACTURING ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND CARBON EMISSIONS. USING EAST TENNESSEE AS A TEST BED, ETISE WILL AIM TO THREE OBJECTIVES: 1) UNDERSTAND THE SMART MANUFACTURING IMPLEMENTATION FOR ENERGY MANAGEMENT BY INDUSTRIES AND SIZES IN THE REGION, 2) DEVELOP A TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND WORKFORCE TRAINING MODEL AT THE REGIONAL LEVEL THROUGH GROUND SERVICE TO MANUFACTURERS IN EAST TENNESSEE, AND 3) PROVIDE DOE AND ITS ADVANCED MANUFACTURING OFFICE (AMO) STRATEGIC SUGGESTIONS AND MATERIALS TO PROMOTE THE ADOPTION OF SMART MANUFACTURING FOR ENERGY MANAGEMENT. OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LAB (ORNL) IS A STRATEGIC PARTNER FOR THIS PROPOSED INITIATIVE. EAST TENNESSEE IS AN IDEAL PLACE TO BE A TEST BED WITH ABOUT 2,200 MANUFACTURERS WITH FEWER THAN 500 EMPLOYEES ALONG WITH LARGER MANUFACTURERS SUCH AS VOLKSWAGEN, EASTMAN, DENSO, CLAYTON HOME, ETC. THE INNOVATIONS OF THE PROPOSED ETISE ARE AROUND FOUR LEVERAGES: 1) THE LEVERAGE OF THE TECHNOLOGIES AND TOOLS DEVELOPED BY THE TEAM AND ORNL FOR THE INTEGRATION OF SMART MANUFACTURING AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS, 2) THE LEVERAGE OF EXISTING MANUFACTURER NETWORKS OF TN MEP, BETTER PLANT PROGRAM, AND UT, 3) THE LEVERAGE OF EXPERTISE OF ISO 50001 EXPERTS, THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AT UT, AND ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT OF ISSE AT UT, AND 4) THE LEVERAGE OF TN OFFICE OF ENERGY PROGRAMS, LOCAL UTILITIES, AND LOCAL PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS FOR PUBLIC AWARENESS AND TRAINING. THOSE LEVERAGES AND PLANNED ACTIVITIES WILL ADVANCE THE UNDERSTANDING ON HOW TO ENHANCE SMART MANUFACTURING ADOPTION FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND CARBON EMISSION REDUCTION AND CREATE NEW INTELLECTUAL PRODUCTS, SUCH AS SMART MANUFACTURING MATURITY MODELS FOR ENERGY MANAGEMENT AND RELEVANT TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROTOCOLS. ETISE WILL DELIVER A SURVEY REPORT WITH MANUFACTURERS IN DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES AND WITH DIFFERENT SIZES, AN ANALYSIS OF SMART MANUFACTURING MATURITY FOR ENERGY MANAGEMENT, AT LEAST 12 TECHNICAL ASSISTANCES, AT LEAST FOUR PUBLIC WORKSHOPS TO CREATE AWARENESS, AT LEAST FOUR TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR WORKFORCE AND TRAINERS, A PROTOCOL FOR TECHNICAL ASSISTANCES WITH MATERIALS TO HELP MANUFACTURERS IN ADOPTING SMART MANUFACTURING, IMPLEMENTING ENERGY MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM, AND PRACTICING ISO 50001, INVOLVEMENT OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN ASSISTANCES AND TRAINING, A REPORT SUMMARIZING STRATEGIC SUGGESTIONS FORMED DURING THIS PILOT PROGRAM, AT LEAST TWO PROMOTION MATERIALS TO INTRODUCE MANUFACTURERS SMART MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES AND BEST PRACTICES FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND CARBON REDUCTION, THREE CASE STUDIES OF SUCCESSFUL INTEGRATIONS OF SMART MANUFACTURING AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS WITH REDUCED ENERGY CONSUMPTION, ENERGY COSTS, AND GHG EMISSIONS, AND TWO JOURNAL PAPERS BASED ON THE RESEARCH OUT OF ETISE ACTIVITIES.
