THIS THREE YEAR RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO STUDY THE TURBULENT DEVELOPMENT OF RAYLEIGH-TAYLOR INSTABILITY (RTI) AND RICHTMYER-MESHKOV INSTABILITY (RMI) AT LARGE REYNOLDS NUMBERS. THIS PROGRAM INCLUDES INCOMPRESSIBLE AND COMPRESSIBLE EXPERIMENTS TO BE CARRIED OUT IN THREE EXISTING APPARATUSES. INCOMPRESSIBLE RTI WILL BE STUDIED IN A DROP TOWER IN WHICH A BOX CONTAINING TWO UNEQUAL DENSITY LIQUIDS IS ACCELERATED DOWNWARD USING LINEAR INDUCTION MOTORS AT A RATE GREATER THAN THE EARTH’S GRAVITY. IN ADDITION, COMPRESSIBLE RTI WILL BE STUDIED IN A RAREFACTION TUBE APPARATUS IN WHICH RTI AT HIGH ACCELERATION IS GENERATED USING INTERACTION WITH A RAREFACTION WAVE. THE RMI EXPERIMENTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN A DUAL-DRIVER VERTICAL SHOCK TUBE (DDVST) THAT IS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING OPPOSING SHOCKS OF VARIABLE STRENGTH AND TIMING ALLOWING THE VIEWING OF THE INSTABILITY AT MUCH LONGER DURATION THAN IS POSSIBLE IN STANDARD SHOCK TUBES
