HARVARD UNIVERSITY - NEW OPEN 2018 AWARD CONTROL #: 1858-3849 PROJECT TITLE: ''GAN NMR SPECTROMETER INTEGRATED CIRCUITS TOWARDS BROADLY DISTRIBUTED ON-LINE MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT OF SUBSURFACE OIL/GAS RESERVOIRS AND DOWNSTREAM'' NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE (NMR) IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL TOOLS TO ELUCIDATE MOLECULAR STRUCTURES. HARVARD UNIVERSITY WILL DEVELOP HANDHELD NMR ELECTRONICS (<1 KG) BASED ON GAN INTEGRATED CIRCUITS. THE USE OF THE WIDE BANDGAP GAN IS TO ALLOW OPERATION AT DEEP SUBSURFACE TEMPERATURES. THE OVERALL, DRASTICALLY MINIATURIZED, NMR SYSTEM COMBINING THE GAN IC AND A PERMANENT MAGNET CAN BE FAR MORE BROADLY DISSEMINATED THROUGHOUT GEOLOGICAL FORMATION, ENABLING LONG-TERM DISTRIBUTED IMAGING OF EARTH’S SUBSURFACE AND TRANSFORMING OIL DISCOVERY AND PRODUCTION ACROSS MATURE FIELDS, DEEP WATER FIELDS, AND UNCONVENTIONAL OIL/GAS RESERVOIRS. THIS WILL REDUCE ENERGY IMPORTS, IMPROVE ENERGY EFFICIENCY, AND ENSURE THE US TO MAINTAIN A LEAD IN THE PETROPHYSICS ENERGY TECHNOLOGY AT THE INTERSECTION WITH THE WIDEBAND GAP SEMICONDUCTOR TECHNOLOGY.
