REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO/LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LAB - 1953-1557 DOWNHOLE TITLE:NEXT GENERATION HIGH-TEMPERATURE OPTICAL FIBERS FOR USE IN GEOTHERMAL SYSTEMS UC BOULDER AND LLNL WILL DEVELOP A NOVEL PROCESS FOR APPLYING METALLIC COATINGS TO OPTICAL FIBERS THAT WILL ALLOW THE FABRICATION OF DISTRIBUTED OPTICAL SENSORS FOR HIGH-TEMPERATURE GEOTHERMAL WELLS. THE MAIN INNOVATION FOR OUR TECHOLOGY IS USING METALLIC SLURRIES TO APPLY THE COATING IN AN INLINE PROCESS INTEGRATED WITH A FIBER DRAW TOWER. THIS NEW OPTICAL TECHNOLOGY WILL FILL AN IMPORTANT TECHNOLOGY GAP TO ENABLE DISTRIBUTED SENSING IN HIGH-TEMPERATURE ENHANCED GEOTHERMAL SYSTEM WELLS AND HELP OPTIMIZE PRODUCTION. THIS SUPPORTS ARPA-E’S MISSION TO SUPPORT TRANSFORMATIONAL RESEARCH THAT IMPROVES ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF ALL ECONOMIC SECTORS AND ENSURES THAT THE UNITED STATES MAINTAINS A TECHNOLOGICAL LEAD IN DEVELOPING AND DEPLOYING ADVANCED ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES.
