Abstract

This doctoral dissertation project examines the categories of objects that fall under legal guidelines related to protected research sites. Specifically, it collects new data from researchers and communities on the importance of specific object categories and assembles a database of relevant categorical data for future decisions about protected sites. The project supports student training and science outreach activities in the United States. The project examines the prevalence of faunal remains at protected research sites at a regional level. The focus on institutional and community definitions of protected categories advances research practices and community engagement in the scientific research enterprise. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
