Abstract

This project will build capacity in the geosciences and in academic and non-academic institutions through leadership development, the practice of team-based science, and through the development of partnerships. Program activities will focus on supporting cohorts of early career fellows through their educational and career trajectories. Fellows will be mentored by peers and previous cohort members and recognized innovators. This project will support partnerships between team members, universities, community-based organizations, and Tribal authorities. Project activities will ensure that the next generation Geoscience workforce has the technical and collaboration skills necessary for successful STEM careers. The project will engage geoscience early career fellows, community experts, faculty, and other professionals, including more than 100 individuals per year. This project will provide opportunities for empowering, supporting, and retaining people in earth system science and STEM fields to become the innovation, scientific, and social leaders needed by the country. This work will build capacity in the geosciences and in academic and non-academic institutions for community-centered work relating to environmental science that includes different ways of knowing and knowledge creation. Project leaders cultivate leadership skills through communities of learning and practice to enable the network of environment- and community-focused scholars to share their experiences and lessons learned with their peers and mentees. This project will support partnerships between the team members, universities, community-based organizations, and Tribal authorities, and the activities will have impact beyond participating institutions. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
