Abstract

New tools are required to assist people to understand the trustworthiness of the information they receive, separate signals from noise, and become better stewards of the global information environment. Led by the University of Washington, the Verified Information Exchange project seeks to produce an interoperable, modular proof-of-concept technology solution for generating trust signals in digital interactions, helping individuals evaluate the sourcing and veracity of the information they receive.  The trustworthiness of information people receive requires new tools and technology to separate signal from noise. Through this effort, the team’s solution will enable people to become better stewards of the global information environment that surrounds them daily. Using a convergent multidisciplinary approach—comprised of a wide range of backgrounds in data science, technology development, law, business, policy, curriculum development, community management, interdisciplinary research, and finance—the team will develop tools and components to generate and communicate trust signals across disparate domains and use cases. The result will produce an interoperable, modular proof-of-concept for a verified information exchange that would support tools that users can deploy to assess the trustworthiness and authenticity of digital information.
