Abstract

This research examines how communities evaluate the effectiveness of legal and institutional modernization and reform. This research investigates if and how land attachments and work relations are critical variables driving community evaluations of legal modernization efforts. The project also provides technical training for students in methods of scientific data collection and analysis to prepare them for the commercial workforce. This research is important because legal solidity is an integral feature of preparedness for civic programs and critical to maintaining effective infrastructures for economic development and resource management. Research findings will interest government staff, donors, lawmakers, and technical staff who build and create systems that support the efficacy of democratic and material infrastructures and promote workforce preparedness. The researcher will examine agricultural land and water use, vocational training infrastructures, and risk mitigation measures taken among local communities and will gather data using qualitative research methods. The broader research findings will support sociolegal studies, the agricultural economic sector, land and water use, and work relations. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.
