THIS EFFORT BUILDS ON PREVIOUS WORK AND HAS THE CHANCE TO DEVELOP A TRULY TRANSFORMATIVE CAPABILITY FOR RESEARCHING MEDICAL COUNTERMEASURES FOR BIOLOGICAL THREAT AGENTS. THE USE OF A HYPERSPECTRAL IMAGING PUMP-PROBE TECHNIQUE FOR TRACKING PHONONS ASSOCIATED WITH VIRUSES OVER TIME IS A VERY INNOVATIVE APPROACH AND THE ABILITY TO OBSERVE AND TRACK VIRUSES IN VIVO WITHOUT THE USE OF FLUORESCENT REPORTERS IS TRULY DISRUPTIVE FOR UNDERSTANDING VIRAL PATHOGENESIS AND DEVELOPING MEDICAL COUNTERMEASURES. THIS EFFORT ADDRESSES A CURRENT GAP WITHIN THE ASSIGNED THRUST AREA 7 THROUGH ESTABLISHING A NOVEL VIRUS IMAGING PLATFORM THAT WILL VASTLY ACCELERATE COUNTERMEASURE DEVELOPMENT TIMELINES. THE IMAGING PLATFORM (BIOSONIC) WILL PROVIDE A NEW SENSITIVE MODEL THAT WILL GREATLY IMPROVE CURRENT TECHNOLOGIES THAT ARE LIMITED IN THIS SPACE ON VIRAL DYNAMIC UNDERSTANDING. THE TECHNICAL APPROACH BUILDS ON THE PREVIOUSLY FUNDED DTRA WORK THAT DEVELOPED A PRELIMINARY BIOSONICS SYSTEM TO DEMONSTRATE THE CONCEPT OF TRACKING A SINGLE VIRAL PARTICLE.
